Generic printer cartridges

Does anyone know how to help me with my generic printer cartridge? I have a HP OfficeJet 4630 printer. I cannot afford the expensive HP ink. So, I bought a generic one on EBay. Well, I thought it would work. The printer will not accept the generic ink cartridge. I have been searching for help Googling the topic and found the following:

1. Try resetting the printer.
2. Trying covering some of the gold dots on the back of the cartridge with tape.

Does anyone have any more ideas?

Check with Costco if you still have the old HP cartridge. You can get it refilled for $10 or so. I don't know if you must be a member. I know you don't need to have a membership to use the Costco Pharmacy. The membership fee is $60/year. The savings per gallon on gas for my car pays for the Costco membership. Here's a link to the photo center where you can probably find out if your cartridge is refillable.
