I won the Valpak/TBS "Fatherhood is Funny" sweepstakes and got a 46" Sony Bravia LCD HDTV, the wall bracket to hang it up, and a Sony Platinum DVD Dream Home Theater. The value was quoted at $5000, although with the sale prices lately it's probably not really that much. I had no use for the home theater, so I sold that, but I'm happy to have the big TV - I'd probably never have gotten one any other way, since I live on a very limited income.
I nearly didn't answer the phone when they called to notify me, because my Caller ID said "unidentified," which usually means some kind of sales or charity call. Good thing I did - the rules say they'll call once to notify winners and won't leave a message. They'll pick a new winner if you don't answer! Seems a bit harsh to me, but you might want to check rules when you enter.
This is the first time I've won a grand prize in a sweepstakes, although I did win $5000 years ago on a scratch-off card that came with a refund. Think that was a Schick or Gilette deal - it was a pen refund, but I've forgotten which brand. It's probably 20 years ago. It wasn't the grand prize, though. Mostly I win small things like coupons for Crunch bars and movie tickets - nice little gifts for my grandson.
I think the secret to winning is to enter often. I always check the secondary prizes, since the odds of winning one are better. I don't usually enter for trips, because I don't want to be paying taxes on those and probably couldn't accept them.
