Migraine relief?

I posted this on another forum but, no response yet so I thought I would ask my fellow SA members.

I have migraine's often but, the last few night since I have been sick has been horrible. Tonight my head hurts even worse. I have taken 3 aleve and don't want to take anymore because, my throat is sore and I have tried cold rags on my forehead. I took a hot bath as well. I laid down and it hurt even more. I even rubbed my temples for awhile, this is making me really sick to my stomach.

Anyone have any suggestions I could try that works for you? TIA

About the only thing that helps me is if I lay down in a dark and quiet room. I used to take about 1200 mgs of Advil but I can't take it anymore ~ if you don't have any other pain medicine it is safe to take that much as long as you don't take it for a long amount of time!

Thank you for the suggestions, I really appreciate it. I am going to take a couple more aleve, I don't want to because, my throat is sore but, worth a try. I have a rag sitting next to me, I need to go and wet it again, maybe if I step outside it will help some. I have jumbled a lot of my words up in my posts tonight on forums so not posting much, lol.

It just came on all of a sudden during dinner tonight. I didn't eat and dh asked me why I wasn't eating so I just said that I ate a late lunch and wasn't hungry (partially true). The main truth was I started feeling really sick to my stomach with a strong (or so I thought) headache was coming on.

:sunny: I believe the Aleve is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and that can upset your stomach. Tis better to take Tylenol, acetaminophen.
Acetaminophen, sold as Tylenol, has no anti-inflammatory action and does not cause bleeding or gastrointestinal distress, but taking more than 4,000 milligrams a day can damage the liver, particularly if the liver is in the body of someone who likes a drink.

If your throat is also sore you may be coming down with something.

Tammy is right about a dark room. I sure remember those migrane days. Got rid of the husband and I got rid of the migraines! Hope your feeling better soon, without having to get rid of a husband!

I didn't realize that it could cause an upset stomach. I didn't take it until after I started to feel this way but, it has progressed so that is a possibility. I ran out of ibprofin and the Aleve is hubby's for his back and I take it sometimes to help with my teeth so I thought it would work.

I had to laugh about

Got rid of the husband and I got rid of the migraines! Hope your feeling better soon, without having to get rid of a husband!
 hubby and I are doing better since we got back together so I don't think I want to get rid of him yet, well, maybe tomorrow for a little while, lol. I think when hubby goes to work and the kids are on the bus I am sleeping in! I have horrible sleeping habits.

I turned off the lights and the tv is really low, left it on for some light for the kids (for now, how many more times can I say "for"?) so the only light is coming from the laptop and heaters. I feel a little, tiny bit of relief coming on...at least I pray it is!

:sunny: Check this out and maybe you can narrow it down:

lol, great minds think alike because, I just pulled that up from blingo. I have been sick for a week now, I am getting better though except my throat seems to be getting a little worse. Dh is really sick though, he needs to go to the dr. but, won't. No wonder I stay sick, everyone gives it to me! :nono:

You know me Miki, I'll happily post all the symptoms of mengintits

Seriously, since you have untreaded ongoing dental infection there is always a risk of the bacterial infection spreading to your brain...

Ack! You know, I have a problem. My mother and husband always has to get after me because, I try to self diagnose anything wrong with me. You should see some of the things I have thought I have had over the years of being online, I can seriously scare myself silly. :nono:

Someone suggested Lavendar lotion/alcohol so I am trying that out as well. Anything is worth a shot at this point. I do have to admit, it has lightened up a tad since turning everything off and continuing cold compressions on my head.

I may go lay down again in a few.

Usually with a migraine you have inflation on one side of the head or the other that is why an anti-inflammatory sometimes works better ~ I can't take them though ~ so I am on Topamax daily just to prevent and it has done wonders for me. Sometimes you can figure out your triggers ~ some of them are hormones, smells, stress, and foods. If you can figure out your trigger maybe you can avoid it somewhat!!

One way to tell if you have swelling on one side of your head is if your nose is stopped up on one side or the other. That isn't always a sign of a migraine, but it sometimes is a sign that one is coming on. Of course there is always auras also which I have every now and then.

If you can get the doctor to give you some medicine for your migraines you might want to get him or her to give you some promethazine for your stomach also. It will ease your stomach and maybe help you sleep!!

A good over the counter product for nausea is Dramamine (Dimenhydrinate), assuming you are able to take it without adverse effect. I have to use Ativan for nausea because the only other anti-nausea meds that don't make me sick also cost $600 for 20 tablets :crazytongue: So I'm not nauseated and I luv eberybody....warble...

I hope ya feel better. I get migraines real bad too. I take excedrin and lay down in a dark room with a cold washcloth on the back of my neck. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. Usually I just have to go to sleep and hope when I wake up its not as bad. But then I wake up with the migraine hang over. Dont know how else to describe it. dark and quiet are your best bets. feel better

Thanks everyone. I went to bed not long after I posted last and I woke up with a slight headache so once the kids were off to school I went back to bed. I am feeling a little better, hopefully I don't get what I had last night again, it was horrible.

I am sorry to hear you were not feeling well Miki!
I get Migraines too, some of the remedy's that have worked for me (besides going to the ER and getting a shot of Demerol) are;
A strong cup of coffee but only one as more than that will mess with a "Migraine stomach" (you know nauseous, throw up etc). The caffeine opens up the blood vessels in your head.
putting a little icy hot on my temples and back of the neck (I do not know how it works, but it works)
Dark, quiet room
Ibuprofen
Cold, damp cloth over my eyes.

 miki

I got something (besides my meds - ergotomine) for migraines called the Herbal Headache Stick Roll On Applicator and it works!!! :headbang:

The ergotomine was prescribed after I complained of sinus headaches - turned out thery were really migraines!!! :crazytongue:

If I catch it too late though, I HAVE to go to bed and just hope I wake up OK - I totally understand you 3mnkids1:

But then I wake up with the migraine hang over. Dont know how else to describe it.

I also got something called the Davinci Tool for my back spasms - seems they are a BIG trigger for me!!! :nono:

For those who don't know about migraine headaches:

http://www.neurologychannel.com/migraine/naturalmedicine.shtml

Migraine headaches are caused by excessive dilation of the cerebral blood vessels, though scientists do not fully understand what causes the dilation in the first place. Blood vessels don't just dilate spontaneously - they are presumably responding to chemical changes that are occurring in the body.

A naturopathic physician or holistic medical doctor will want to take a complete medical, family, menstrual, and diet history before considering the cause of migraine. Some of the illnesses to be ruled out are bowel problems, mold allergies, vitamin deficiencies, hypertension, TMJ misalignment, food allergies or intolerances, dehydration, spinal subluxations, coffee/caffeine intoxication, and aspartame (Nutrasweet, Equal) toxicity among others. All of these problems can cause migraine symptoms and usually can be treated very easily without the use of drugs.

If you like to deal holistically:

I didn't know about some of them so I haven't tried them. :)

Thanks ladies :) I have excedrine and DENTS on my shopping list. Someone also told me to give "head on" a try. (I hate those commercials!) By the time I am finished, I will have a pharmacy between all the stuff I already have and the things I need to get.

I was in town yesterday (live about 25 or so from town) to buy some groceries, I don't know why I didn't stop off at Walgreens while I was there. I should be going to town again tomorrow since dh gets paid and we have some bills to pay (internet for one!!) so I think I will say "Honey, for my valentine's gift, can you buy this and this and this? I know you want me to feel better!". Wonder if he will go for it if I toss in anything else, joking

My throat feels better today too. The first thing I did tonight was popped a couple aleve so that if anything starts it will subside (hopefully). I think that by sleeping in after getting the kids off helped. I was woken up by someone wanting to borrow something. Too bad it wasn't UPS or fed-ex, well..I was in my PJs still so poor guy would have dropped the package and ran.
