Natural Disasters

I'm not debating nor do I think you started a religious debate. I simply gave my opinion and it wasn't directed at anyone in particular. It was directed at anyone who may think we are being punished by way of natural disasters and/or other devastating occurences and/or one's particular lifestyle.

I know you aren't :) I didn't mean to make it appear that way I just know these topics can get out of hand really fast. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

No apologies necessary, cin

It's a great topic of discussion! We too have noticed the recent frequency of natural disasters and have talked at great length about why they may be(hubby and I). The shifting of the plates in California and the west coast caused by the pressure of the ocean leaves no room for speculation. It is what it is.

We've also noticed the changing of the seasons or a small lack there of(seasons running together). We are speculating it is the way of the world, the progression of nature and all of its elements. I say speculating because I still can't form a solid opinion on global warming. Just when I think I've reached a decision on it, there's something new to ponder.

Hubby isn't ambiguous, though. He believes global warming is BS. Like I've said, I'm still riding the fence.

Global warming another hot topic litterally  I do see things have changed but I tend to see it all in the plan.

As for how science explains it I have seen both sides have their views. I really don't know if I believe it or not.

I believe there is something to Global warming although not to the extent that Al Gore does  I think alot of things like Global warming and natural disasters being called signs of "the End" are just scare tactics. How many people do you know that went crazy with talk about the y2k bug and stocked piled crap? I know a few. They spent a small fortune on things like wind up radio's.

Its like the news media.."There is something in your home KILLING you!.. Story tomorrow at Eleven.".. hmmmm, if its so important tell me now. nope. Its scare tactics.

Its the government and all their "Threat level~~~~ Elevated.". wth does that even mean?
can we talk about conspiracies now?

911 was caused by our government. I love that show at late night radio Coast to coast. They have all kinds of interesting stuff on there. It's on from 12 to 4 I believe.

. I may not agree but Im not going to bad mouth them or make them feel they cant express themselves.

I love you guys
I remember the one about the sugar industry having Dr. Atkins murdered. Since the good doctor's untimely death occured at the same time they were doing this

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2003/apr/21/usnews.food

The sugar industry in the US is threatening to bring the World Health Organisation to its knees by demanding that Congress end its funding unless the WHO scraps guidelines on healthy eating, due to be published on Wednesday.

The threat is being described by WHO insiders as tantamount to blackmail and worse than any pressure exerted by the tobacco lobby.

It looked pretty suspicious

See, when we stopped teaching people critical thinking skills, we ended up with this kind of bs :nono:

Why Teach Critical Thinking Skills?
Topic: Teaching Critical Thinking Skills

If we teach children everything we know, their knowledge is limited to ours. If we teach children to think, their knowledge is limitless. Our ability to succeed in life is directly proportional to our ability to solve the problems we encounter along life’s journey. Tragically, elementary and secondary education is mostly memorization. The biggest problem facing educators today is the inability of most students to think analytically. Educators and parents commonly see the following list of academic problems, which are directly related to a child’s ability to think.

I watch a lot of nature shows by proxy - Bob has it on so I see it

I also read the paper every day (I know, dinosaur :crazytongue: ) Hey, I read online too!!!

My dad worked for JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) as a physicist:

http://science.jpl.nasa.gov/people/Toth/

and he studied the ozone layer. I asked him about the theory that WE cause global warming, that I thought it was bs, and he concurred. Seems throuhout the "life" of our planet, we've had extreme global warming & cooling periods - before the industrial age, even before people!!!

Do we contribute to our planets ills? Probably, but I think we are but fleas on an elephant. :crazytongue:

Actually, those shows I mentioned? Seeing the tenuous hold we have on life, well, it really freaks me out

To go back to the disasters for a minute 50,000.00 dead in China and may be more. How devistating. It is just so hard to even immagine something happening like that here and it could.

I've been watching this on the news. Children being buried alive from 4 stories up. I can't even imagine how utterly horrifying and devastating

One interesting thing that happens during earthquakes-when the vibration is right, the ground essentially turns into a liquid, so you can sink right into it. Then, when the shaking stops, it "hardens" up again. Like having concrete instantly set up around you.
Some soils behave in a liquid fashion when subjected to ground vibrations causing their internal resistance to slipping to be greatly reduced. This process is called liquefaction.

If how the government responded to the Katrina disaster is any indication I think we would be royally screwed if that happened here. I hope the numbers are exaggerated.

Interesting, I always wondered what caused the wave sensations when we had earthquakes. Sometimes I would sit there and I would see the waves and others didn't feel them and thought I was crazy because, I would jump up and say "Where's my kids! We are having an earthquake!". The bad thing about quakes, you never know when one is coming.

I feel terrible for those in china right now.
