Potato eyes scare the crap out of me!

I'm going to make fries as a side for dinner. I get the potatoes out and notice they have eyes. Big eyes!! Big SCARY eyes! Not covered in them but they are there nonetheless. I just bought this bag of potatoes Friday, and I always store them in my potato bin which is cool and dry.

Why do potatoes grow eyes? Does that mean they're bad? Some of the eyes are so big they look like albino spiders! I'm grossed out. I don't feel like going 10 miles into town to the store. Can the eyes be cut off and the potatoes used? If so, I'm giving hubby potato duty.
 
Potatoes basically 'know' that it is planting season...they grow eyes so you can plant them and get crops out of them. I just cut up probably 100 seed potatoes the other day.

Yes, you can cut off the eyes and cook them like normal...I hate them too!!

I think it is the change in the weather that gets them!
 
I Dont mind the way the look its the way they feel. I expect when Im holding one to feel it tickle the inside of my palm(shudders violently)..

Yes, you can grow your own. Simply cut the eyes out from the potato...leaving a chunk of potato with each eye you cut out. Then, plant each eye chunk into the ground or at least a 12" deep pot. Water as needed and soon you will be digging up your own fresh eyeless potato.

And there is nothing better than new potatoes!!! Puts what you get at the store to shame! I love digging potatoes...I think it is fun!!

I normally cut them off, I am paranoid that they are going to make someone sick. I didn't know you could cut them off and plant the eyes, will have to try that! Thanks for that tip.

I have such a black thumb, but I am determined to have us a vegetable garden this year. Our soil is like clay so I'm going to have to have top soil brought in for our garden. In the meantime, I'm going to plant the potatoes in a deep pot once I get a new bag of them and let them grow eyes LOL

Pammy, that is EXACTLY what I planned on making today...a big pot of green beans, potatoes, ham, and cabbage. LOVE that stuff!!! But I already had thawed these brats so we're making those instead.
 
Your definently not the only one scared of Potato eyes. I can't stand them! They look so creepy like they're looking at me or something. Even after they were cut off and the potato was cooked I still couldn't keep my mind of of those eyes. lmbo! :laughing:

Me too! My landlord says my property is not fertile enough but, I think he just doesn't want me to build a big garden, lol. 3 people keep my stocked up on okra and yellow squash during the summer but, I want to grow some more things to save on the grocery bill. Let's just hope my thumb can turn green enough for it as my husband and one of my inlaws is going to get me a couple really large tractor tires to plant in. I think I will fill 1/2 up with dirt and pick up a few bags of soil to fill the rest of the way up.

Now to figure out what exactly I want to grow! I am determined, it's an obsession really. :laughing:
 
:sunny:That's so funny to me. My dad would always go to the farm store and buy seed potatoes(they're cheaper than buying reg. potatoes). We would spend an afternoon sitting outside and cutting these into pieces, making sure each had at least one eye, to plant in our garden, which was huge. We would dig potatoes by the wheelbarrow full. It's flower and veg. planting time, that's why I haven't been on for a while. Trying to get things done in between the rain every other day.

and the eyes are there for a reason, kinda like our

eyes are and sooo gooooood new.There is nothing

like a new potato and it depends on the seed potato you

buy to what the size you get.If you want a big baking potato

then plant Kennybecks but if you want a good frying potato

buy a Cobbler,my favorite.That is the tater' lesson for today. :wave:
