question for Ken

Ken,

I have noticed that since about the start of December it has become more and more difficult to use/browse this site. As pages load ... they start, then freeze up ... then they might finish loading over the next 30-180 seconds ... or not! Sometimes I can get out of the freeze by refreshing the page other times I have to completely restart my browser (IE6). It has been a total pain in the rear end, but I have been dealing with it. :error:

The main problem is that it is getting worse and worse! This only occurs when I am browsing here ... and at no other sites. :error:

Now today ... when I try to enter contests via the "one entry" lists, for example, the page will only list numbers 101-176 with an obvious code flaw on the last entry displayed. If I jump to the next "page" it will start at 202 and there is no way I can access the missing 25 listings! Also today: if I hit one of your "ads" which we are supposedly able "opt out" of my browser again freezes up like the iceberg that sank the Titanic! :error:

Of course, the "blog section" has never functioned correctly using IE6, so I have quit trying to use it. :error:

Now I realize that life goes on and new things come along ... but if I can't use this site in an efficient manner the question arises why I should bother using it at all? And as you all know I really love this site ... but ... if I can't use it ... if I can't enter sweepstakes????? :error:

There seems to be a problem involved with some of the new "code" being used here, most likely some sort of "script" problem, and it appears to involve IE6. The "code-geeks" have obviously neglected to remember that some folks don't have the latest version of "Microbuck$". :error:

Maybe you could go to the "forum owners" tech site and see if anybody might have a suggestion or a 'work-around'???

I'm sorry for my frustration ... but I wanted to enter contests this evening and it is finally nearly impossible.

Thanks in advance,
Loren :)

(PS: For all of you who would now run to the "rescue" of Ken with righteous indignation and tell me I'm ungrateful to him and his hard work ... skip it ... I am not "picking" on him ... I just wanna enter some contests just like the rest of you!!! :) )

I have not been able to use Ie6 on here so what I did was download firefox and it is a lot faster than what Ie7 is as I had to upgrade my os so that I could use Ie7 but I only mainly use firefox. On most all sites now plus it is no cost.

At one time I tried Firefox, but I couldn't get Roboform to work right. I may have to try it again as I have some of the same problems as LB.

I have had no problems, but I do have a fairly new computer, and my son set it up. I am not sure what you mean when you say use foxfire, if it is your explorer, mine is Internet explorer 5.0 and Yahoo. Sorry I can't tell you more so you could use the same stuff and see if it would work for you, if you want to know more ask and I will try and answer it, sorry I am defiantly not a computer person. Hope it gets to working for you. And I will still say thanks to Ken and all the SA for all the work, but don't mean anything bad toward you Loren, I could see where your problem would get annoying. Hope it gets better.

I'm having the same problems you are LB. I know Admin has been doing a lot of work on the site, so I figure is it just a temporary issue.

I'm sorry if I'm sounding frustrated ...

... like I stated it sounds like a "script" problem.

I am not a programmer, but I do know that when a browser (like IE6 or 7) encounters a "script instruction" it looks for internal coding to handle that script. If it doesn't immediately find those instructions it will then search, first, your browser code and then your entire computer for those instructions ... which will "freeze" your computer while it searches all available codes on your hard drive since the search naturally has priority. Upon failure to locate the required codes one of two operations will occur: Your browser will execute the site without displaying the property required by the script .... OR .... your browser will "loop" continuously looking for it forever and ever, which essentially freezes it up until you reboot the browser. It just depends.

The "script instruction" can be faulty or the internal coding isn't on your computer. In either case major problems ensue whenever that situation is encountered.

Almost all scripts are directly related to graphics ... specifically graphics used to support fancy, high-speed presentations and are not required in the general basic operation of a website. That is why Hotmail had to offer a separate presentation of their site after they made it "bigger and better" ... many people were unable to functionally use the site. Just recently they have switched to a "medium" presentation which is almost entirely devoid of these fancy scripts.

Loren :)

I would strongly consider upgrading to IE7. No one codes pages to specifically work with IE6 because it is a insecure version of Microsoft's web browser. Any newer web browser IE7, Firefox or even the new Google Chrome would be a much better choice and more compatible/secure for all the WWW.

I can't reproduce any of these because I'm not running IE6.

* Please also mention the specific url/page on SA whenever reporting a problem because it could be page specific
and not related to any particular web browser version. There are several one entry sections on SA, expiring, new, ongoing , etc.

If this is something we can fix without jeopardizing the security of the site we want to get this remedied right away.

Regards-

Ken, I am running IE 7 and have been having these hangs in the forums. Many times when trying to post, but also just trying to enter a thread. I don't get an error message, nothing happens. It just sits and sits and sits. I have to back out and try again.

Im using FF and sometimes it happens to me also. It will show the top bar.. with my avatar, and just seems to get stuck right there for awhile. hasnt done it today though.

We've done a couple recent upgrades to the forum and it could be due to one of those. I did just change the ad serving code to iframe so that it would not prevent the page from loading ( just in case ). From this point on if we receive no more hangs in the forum this will hopefully be it. I'll wait to hear back in this topic to see if anyone else has any more issues and we'll get to the bottom of it.

Thank You.

My primary laptop crashed and I am on my backup. I hate this one, but I have not experienced any problems yet. Thanks.

Scripts cause so many problems...many people can't load my blog in IE if there is script in my html, so I have to make sure my html is script free.

In my opinion script is the devil :cussing:
