UPS and Fedex warning

I am not going to air my dirty laundry but I wanted you to be aware.

I received a phone call from someone who claimed to the from UPS. Said they had a package for me and wanted to make sure I would be home to sign for it. I thought it was odd that she said my old address and new address was on the package and wanted to know which was correct. I wasn't thinking and told her. Then she asked if I wanted to know who it was from, said yes, did not recognize the name, then she said it was a cashiers check ( how would she know?) and since they would be delivering basically cash they would need a password for the driver, I said OK (wondering why not just ID), She said how about your place of employment, told her I wasn't employed. After I hung up the phone I thought that was weird and tried to called UPS back but could not find a local number. Call the 800 #, was told yes they do call to make sure you will be home but they couldn't verify if the call I received was from them. My son suggested * 69 and I got the UPS store. Told them I had just received a call from them about a package. They said I didn't, that they don't deal with packages, only supplies. I said yes, someone called from there and No, we did not. Needless to say, UPS never showed up at my house. Now I am waiting to find out who it was.

I would have caught on to the phone call right off, if I hadn't received a call from UPS earlier in the week. They couldn't deliver here because of the snow and I had to go in and pick it up. At that time I told them the roads had been cleared.

I did some checking on the internet and found out that Process Servers, Debt Collectors, Private Investigators do call and verify information claiming to be from UPS or Fedex. One went so far as to wear a UPS hat and have a package in hand when he went to the door. It is illegal for Debt Collectors not to identify themselves but they do it any way. Also found out there is software out there that will change the phone number, so when a call comes in it will have a different number show up on caller ID.

So anyone who may have financial problems, going through a divorce, custody battle or anything that has to do with the courts be aware. Also, if you are hiding from an abusive ex partner or anyone else, they could have someone call and make sure you will be home when they show up.

:sunny: There are scammers everywhere. The only advise I can give to anyone receiving a call like this is to get online to the UPS or Fedex and ask the person calling for the tracking number before you give out any information. If it is legit they will have no problem giving you that information.
