Storm total accumulations of 2"-3" will be possible for Price, northern Lincoln, Oneida, Forest and Vilas Counties; with 2"-4" possible for Taylor, most of Lincoln, Langlade, much of Clark, Marathon, Shawano and northern portions of Wood and Portage Counties; with 3"-6" possible for the rest of the southern portion of the area.

More wintry weather is on the way for today, but don`t get too depressed because the outlook for the weekend is looking better. After several days in the 20s and 30s, it finally looks like some 50 degree weather is possible by early next week.

For today and tonight a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Jackson, Monroe, Juneau, Adams, Waushara, Waupaca, and Shawano counties. A snow advisory is in effect for the same time period for Price, Taylor, Marathon, Menominee, Wood, and Portage counties. Some light snow will continue this morning in the southern half of the area, mainly south of Wausau. By this afternoon there could be an inch or two on the ground in places like Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids, and Wautoma. Up to an inch is possible in Marathon county. Heavier snow will then develop during the late afternoon and evening and it will move farther north. Overnight 3 to 6 inches additional accumulation is possible for areas south and east of Wausau, while 2 to 4 inches is likely around Marathon county and 1 to 3 inches in possible in the northwoods. It will be a heavy wet snow and since the ground is close to being frozen once again, some of the roads will become slippery.

Some light snow showers will still be around the area Thursday morning but the activity should taper to flurries by midday. With mostly cloudy skies and a northwest wind, high temps tomorrow will only reach the mid to upper 30s. On Friday a little more sun should grace to fields and forests of northcentral Wisconsin and that means the mercury should reach the mid 40s.

Yesterday, I had mentioned that there was another chance of rain or accumulating snow for the weekend (on Saturday), but it now looks like the storm system will stay far enough south of Wisconsin that we will only have a slight chance of rain or snow showers on Saturday and warmer temps should be in the works on Sunday. Highs will reach the mid 40s on Saturday and the low 50s on Sunday. Early next week temps should remain close to normal with highs in the low to mid 50s on Monday and Tuesday.

Weather History:
On this date in 1989 forty-four cities in the south central and eastern U.S. reported new record low temperatures for the date. Lows of 25 degrees at Conway AR, 29 degrees at Dallas/Fort Worth TX, and 22 degrees at Ozark AR, were April records. Lows of 26 degrees at Hot Springs AR and 31 degrees at Shreveport LA equalled April records. (Source: The National Weather Summary)

The first day of spring was more than 80 degrees here in Chattanooga, TN. We're right on the GA state line. Since then, many "outdoor" days until dogwood winter or blackberry winter. I forget which it is. That means about 5 days of cooler weather. Tomatoes are in the ground with blooms already.

So far this month of April (up until the last couple of days) it has felt more like Winter than Spring. Most of the area has received over 4 inches of snow (all of it is now melted), and temps have been well below normal. In Wausau we are currently on pace to break the record for the coldest April ever. The average temperature so far this month is 32.3. During the record cold April of 1950 the average temp for the month was 34.0. So it has been quite cold this year but we won`t break the record because near and a little above normal temps will develop for the next few days and should continue through the end of the month. The average for the month will probably end up somehwere near 40.

The only thing that will be below normal for the next few days is precipitation, which is bad. We need April showers to bring May flowers and summer crops. The only chance of showers is on Tuesday and then again Friday into Saturday. Tuesday`s rainfall will likely be inconsequential, a few hundredths at best. Saturday is our best chance for a few tenths of an inch. Along with the dry weather will come a lot of sunshine and nice temps. Highs should be in the mid to upper 50s for the next week or so with a couple days in the low 60s. Monday could be one of the days in the low 60s and then again on Friday and Saturday.

Weather History:
On this date in 1921 two mile high Silver Lake, CO, received 76 inches of snow in 24 hours, the heaviest 24 hour total of record for North America. The storm left a total of 87 inches in twenty-seven and a half hours.

The RAIN is unbelievable. We have had 4 inches so far with another 2-4 expected in the next 24 hours! I just got in from picking up the husband and the roads are scary! If you are in the Northeast and you need to go out, please drive carefully.

Even my dogs won't go out! :smt009

Not much to talk about in the weather except for warmer temperatures and more sunshine. Considering the way temps have been mild and precipitation has been below normal for the last 4 years, Wisconsin could start advertising "good climate" as a benefit of living in the state. Pretty soon we`ll be singing "It never rains in central Wisconsin" instead of "Southern California". Wisconsin dairy farmers can start running their own "happy cow" commercials to counter those silly, misleading, and untrue commercials from California. The point is, it looks like great weather all the way through Sunday afternoon. It`s great except for the fact that it will be too dry.

We will start out today with some areas of cloudiness but then more sunshine should develop for the afternoon. The sunshine should help temps rise into the low 60s. Partly to mostly sunny skies should continue on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with high temperatures climbing a bit each day. We should eexperience mid to upper 60s on Friday, low 70s Saturday, and mid 70s on Sunday. It will be good weather for getting outdoors, spring cleaning, or prepping the garden.

Any rain or thunderstorms will likely hold off until Sunday evening and then continue into Monday morning. I am hoping for a quarter to half inch. We really could use an inch or so, but knowing our luck the thundershowers will fizzle out just before getting here. We`ll see. If we don`t have much rain Sunday night then we might have to wait another week or so for significant rain. We need April showers to bring May flowers (and green grass and a bunch of other natural goodies), however, it looks like mainly dry weather next week with temps on the mild side. Highs should reach the low to mid 60s from Monday through Wednesday of next week.

On this date in 1973 Glenrock, WY, received 41 inches of snow in just 24 hours, and a storm total of 58 inches, to establish two state records. (18th-20th) (Sources: David Ludlum, The Weather Channel)

STORMS TO FINISH A SUMMERLIKE WEEKEND

In case you have forgotten the last time we reached into the mid 70s around here, it was late in March. Everything is lining up nicely to bring unseasonably warm weather back into our area. We`ll have a fair amount of strong April sunshine this weekend, along with steady south winds. They are dragging in the balmy air out ahead of a storm and cold front in the Plains.

Pockets of rain and storms were found ahead of the front Saturday morning from Northern Minnesota back to Nebraska. But the steering currents will keep that west of Wisconsin for the most part right through midday Sunday.

As the cold front and low pressure system slide into Wisconsin Sunday evening, it could be a much different story. We are actually under a slight risk of severe thunderstorms from the Storm Prediction Center Sunday evening. Right now our thinking is that the more widespread severe storms with possible tornadoes would develop southwest into Iowa and southern Minnesota Sunday afternoon, then weaken somewhat as they slide northeast into our area in the evening. Still some could be capable of winds over 40 mph, small to moderate size hail, heavy downpours, and intense lightning. Please monitor TV 9 and 34 later Sunday for updates.

In any case that whole front will quickly shift east of Wisconsin Monday morning ushering in cooler and drier air. A new storm should slide east through the Plains Tuesday giving much of Wisconsin a chance of light rain. Right now it looks like the rain shield may sink further south Wednesday, maybe just grazing the southern part of our viewing area.

WEATHER HISTORY:
On this date in 1958 - Portions of Montana were in the midst of a spring snowburst. Snowfall amounts ranged up to 55 inches at Red Lodge, 61 inches at Nye Mine, and 72 inches at Mystic Lake. (David Ludlum)

Enjoy the balmy weekend!
