POLLEN COUNT Friday's tree pollen count is 253, which is in the high category. (Courtesy of the Marshfield Clinic-Wausau Center)

TODAY:
Quite breezy. Mostly cloudy with a few showers and perhaps a thunderstorm possible during the morning, then partly sunny during the afternoon. High 64-69. Winds east/southeast 12-25 with higher gusts.

TONIGHT:
Partly cloudy, breezy. Low 41-46. Wind east/southeast 10-20.

SUNDAY:
Windy. Sunny to partly cloudy, warmer. High 70-75. Wind southeast 15-30.

SUNDAY NIGHT:
Increasing clouds, chance of showers and thundestorms late. Low 45-50. Winds south/southeast 10-17.

MONDAY:
Chance of showers and thunderstorms. High 72-77. Winds south 10-17

Today is the official start to the fishing season for many folks and the weather isn`t going to be too bad for the weekend. We kicked off the morning in much of north central Wisconsin with showers scattered about from Hayward southeast through Wausau and down to Wild Rose. Meantime the sun did make an appearance in Eagle River as the dry air kept most of the wet weather out of the area. Just to note, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening for Vilas, Oneida, Forest, and Florence counties due to the dry conditions and windy weather that is anticipated for the weekend. The showers should be winding down this morning, giving way to a mostly cloudy sky. Highs today should peak in the mid 60s. Some clouds around for tonight and a bit breezy with lows in the mid to upper 40s.

Sunday looks to be a brighter day with a good deal of sunshine but blustery conditions. Highs topping out in the lower to mid 70s.

Monday may start with sunshine but clouds will be increasing as the day goes along with the risk of showers or a storm for the afternoon. After a dry day Tuesday, another chance of showers and thunderstorms enters the picture on Wednesday. Hopefully we can pick up some appreciable rain from the passage of this front.

Following that, pleasant weather is expected for Thursday and Friday with some sun and readings ranging from the upper 60s to the mid 70s.

Have a great Saturday!

RED FLAG WARNING
...in effect from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. for Iron, Price, Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Lincoln, Langlade, and Menominee Counties.
A Red Flag Warning means that because of breezy conditions, low relative humidities, and a lack of significant recent rainfall, fire danger will be extremely high. You should not do any burning, as fires could rapidly spread out of control. Fire danger should be high across all of northern and central Wisconsin today as well.

TODAY:
Windy. Sunny to partly cloudy, warmer. High 71-76. Wind southeast 15-30 with gusts to 40 mph.

TONIGHT:
Increasing clouds, chance of showers and thunderstorms late, mainly west of Wausau. Low 44-49. Winds south/southeast 10-20.

MONDAY:
Variable cloudiness. Chance of showers and thunderstorms. High 71-76. Winds south 10-20.

MONDAY NIGHT:
Mainly cloudy. Chance of showers and thunderstorms. Low 48-53. Winds southwest 5-10.

TUESDAY:
Partly sunny. High 72-77. Winds southwest 5-10.

The weather over the past couple of days in the western plains has certainly been rough and in some cases violent. Yesterday alone a little over 90 tornado sightings were reported along with plenty of wind and hail reports, the largest of the hail approaching softball size in Nebraska. Meantime on the complete opposite end of the spectrum here in the Wisconsin River Valley, the weather has been rather tame with breezy southeasterly winds. Today is going to be a bright and windy one across the region, which is not good news for the fire danger that is prevalent in the Northwoods. With that said, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for the entire Northwoods through 8pm this evening. Today is not a good day to be setting up a camp fire or doing grilling with an open fire in this part of the region.

Is there any rain in our future? The answer is yes, but not until later in the day for tomorrow into Tuesday. Now we are not expecting to the type of storms that have raked through Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa as of late, but there is hope that we can pick up some appreciable rain, along with a few strong thunderstorms.

Conditions should start to clear out by Tuesday night with high pressure building back into the Upper Midwest. Highs for the middle to end of the week should be running in the 70s.

The weekend was a little cooler than than expected but not all that bad. We experienced mostly cloudy skies with highs in the 60s and a couple light showers Saturday morning. The only problem was the wind. It was great weather for flying a kite but not so great for all the people out fishing for the opening weekend. I imagine it was hard to manage a boat out on some of the larger lakes. I can`t imagine trying to paddle a canoe in that wind. The wind also lead to extreme fire danger in much of northcentral Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan. Hopefully we will end up with a little rain this week leading to a decrease in the fire danger.

The first and best chance of rain will come today. The remnants of all the severe weather over the plains from this past weekend will try to move northeastward into Wisconsin. The clouds and showers will still be battling some dry air over the Great Lakes but they should eventually win out. Not everyone will have rain today, but those areas that do could end up with a couple tenths of an inch. High temps should reach the mid to upper 60s this afternoon.

The same weather system will linger in the area on Tuesday and maybe even into Wednesday morning. This means a continued chance of showers, but mainly in the southern and eastern parts the area. The northwoods might miss out again. Even the areas that are lucky the rainfall will probably be another tenth or two. High temps on Tuesday should reach the low 70s.

The mild trend will continue on Wednesday and Thursday with high temps in the 70s then a little cooler weather should move in with a cold front on Friday. Sometimes a cold front can mean a good chance of rain but this time around it looks iffy. Right now I am calling for a chance of rain for Friday and Saturday but there doesn`t look to be a lot of moisture in the air as the front moves through so don`t get your hopes up for heavy rain. We`ll keep an eye on it as the week rolls along. High temps should drop into the 60s for Friday and remain in the 60s over the weekend.

Weather History:
On this date in 1988 a powerful storm in the north central U.S. produced up to three feet of snow in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming and the mountains of south central Montana. Up to five inches of rain drenched central Montana in less than 24 hours, and flash flooding in Wyoming caused a million dollars damage. (Sources: Storm Data, The National Weather Summary)

FORECAST (updated 12:00 p.m. 5/8/07)

TODAY:
Hazy sunshine and warm. Very slim chance for a shower after 4pm. High 73-78. Wind west southwest 5-15.

TUESDAY NIGHT:
Stray shower before 10pm. Variably cloudy with patchy fog. Low 52-57. Wind northwest 5-10.

WEDNESDAY:
Partly cloudy and remaining warm. High 75-80. Wind southwest 10-15.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT:
Few clouds with patchy fog. Low 52-57. Wind west southwest 5-15.

THURSDAY:
Partly sunny and warm. High 79-84. Wind southwest 10-20 and gusty.

As expected the rainfall yesterday was nothing to write home about. In Wausau the rainfall was officially a trace. The highest amount reported from our weather watcher network was 0.02 inches in Eagle River and in Medford. So the abnormally dry weather continues along with the high fire danger.

Is there any relief in sight? Not really. The same weather system that brought the sprinkles yesterday will be in the area today and Wednesday. This means the chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue. There is enough humidity in the air that some showers that do form could produce a "good" amount of rain, maybe even a quarter to half inch. The problem is that the showers will be so widely scattered that not many people will benefit. It could be one of those situations where your neighbor just a mile down the road gets a nice shower while your place remains dusty.

After Wednesday it looks like the next chance of rain will come on Friday, but again it is only a slight chance. The next opportunity for more widespread or heavier rainfall will be on Sunday and Monday, although given our luck so far this spring I am not going to get my hopes up too much.

The one benefit of the dry and warm weather is that you can get a lot of work done outdoors. I know a lot of construction foremen who love this type of weather in the spring because they can work and pour cement pretty much 24 hours a day. Temps will be warm all the way through Friday then cool down a bit over the weekend, Highs should reach the mid to upper 70s today and Wednesday, and top out around 80 on Thursday. On Friday the mercury will dip back down into the mid 70s and then on Saturday down into the mid 60s. High temps will rebound a little back up to near 70 on Sunday before dipping into the lower and middle 60s on Monday.

FORECAST (updated 12 p.m. 5/9/07)

TODAY:
Showers north, partly sunny and warm. Another chance for stray storms. High near 70 far north to 75-80 elsewhere. Wind west 5-15.

TONIGHT:
Clearing out with patchy fog. Low 53-58. Wind northwest 5-10.

THURSDAY:
Partly cloudy and near record warmth. High 83-88. Wind west 10-15.

THURSDAY NIGHT:
Partly cloudy and slightly cooler. Low 47-52. Wind north northeast 5.

FRIDAY:
Partly sunny, breezy and cooler. High 67-72. Wind north 10-18.

Some showers and thunderstorms finally developed in the area overnight and there were a couple pockets of heavier rain. Judging by radar trends, some spots may have picked up over a half in with the brief downpours. Due to the scattered nature of the storms, some areas missed out. The storm system that is bringing the rain early this morning will slowly drift eastward across Wisconsin during the afternoon. Therefore, the focus for any redevelopment of showers or thunderstorms will generally be east of I-39 and highway 51. Again this afternoon a few of the thundershowers could produce brief heavy rain around a quarter to half inch. Don`t get your hopes up too much though because it will be widely scattered. In any case, I am happy to see a little rain moving through the area. Even if my house does not get any rain, it is still a good day.

If your home happens to miss out on the rain today, it looks like you might have to wait awhile before another "good" chance comes along. A cool front will move through the area Thursday night into Friday morning but it will not have enough energy or moisture with it to kick off any showers. The front will stall just to our south on Saturday and there could be just enough moisture by then to bring a couple of showers to central Wisconsin early Saturday morning. The front will move back to the north as a warm front on Sunday and bring a better chance of rain and thunderstorms. It looks like from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning will be our next best chance of area-wide rainfall. After Monday it looks like rain chances will be iffy once again.

Along with the higher humidity, warm temps will make it feel like summer today and tomorrow. High temps should reach the mid to upper 70s today and make it all the way into the low 80s tomorrow with plenty of sunshine. I think it is time to put my lemon tree outside. The threat of frost looks minimal for the next few days. The only spots that may flirt with 32 are in the northwoods, particularly on Saturday morning.

After the front moves through Thursday night temps will cool down a bit, back down closer to normal for this time of year. High temps should be in the low 70s Friday, in the mid 60s Saturday, and then rise back into the upper 60s on Sunday.

Weather History:
On this date in 1977 a late season snowstorm hit parts of Pennsylvania, New York State, and southern and central New England. Heavier snowfall totals included 27 inches at Slide Mountain NY and 20 inches at Norwalk CT. At Boston it was the first May snow in 107 years of records. The heavy wet snow caused extensive damage to trees and power lines. The homes of half a million persons were without power following the storm. FORECAST (updated 12 p.m. 5/10/07)

TODAY:
Sunny to partly cloudy and very warm... summertastic! Slim chance for a thundershower after 5pm in Price, Iron, Vilas and Oneida counties. High 82-87. Wind west 10-15.

TONIGHT:
Clearing out with patchy fog. Low 46-51. Wind north northeast 5-10.

FRIDAY:
Partly cloudy, breezy and cooler. High 65-70. Winds northeast 10-20.

FRIDAY NIGHT:
Variably cloudy with a slim chance for a few showers. Low 36-41. WInd northeast 5-10.

SATURDAY:
Partly cloudy and a bit cool. High 61-66. Wind northeast becoming north 10-15.

The good news is that over an inch of rain fell in parts of the northwoods yesterday and amounts were generally a half inch to an inch northeast of Marathon county. The fire danger and drought conditions have lessened. Hooray! The bad news is that the rest of the area did not have much rainfall. There were a couple pockets of rain that produced a tenth or two but most areas reported only a few hundredths. The official total in Wausau was only 0.02 inches. Even worse news is that not much precipitation is in the forecast. Our best chance will be on Monday. Hopefully there will be at least a half inch on Monday because it looks pretty bleak through late next week. This growing season might start out with a significant drought.

We begin this forecast period with very summer-like conditions. There should be plenty of sunshine today along with high temps in the low 80s. A cold front will move through northcentral Wisconsin this evening. Unfortunately the front does not have much moisture or energy to produce rainfall. The only thing we will notice is a change in the wind direction and cooler temps over the next couple of days. We will have plenty of sunshine again on Friday, but high temps will only reach the upper 60s to low 70s. The cool trend and easterly winds will continue over the weekend. High temps on Saturday will be in the mid 60s and on Sunday in the upper 60s. There is a slight chance of a shower or sprinkle around daybreak Saturday morning and a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms Sunday afternoon, otherwise the weekend should be dry with partly sunny skies.

The next cold front to move through the area will arrive on Monday and this one will have a little more moisture so I am bumping the chance of rain up to 40 percent. After Monday high pressure will move into the Great Lakes region and keep things dry...maybe all the way through next Friday. High temps should reach the low 70s on Monday and then drop into the 60s for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Weather History:
On this date in 1990 a spring storm produced heavy snow in Upper Michigan and eastern Wiscosin. Totals ranged up to 12 inches at Marquette MI, with eight inches reported at Muskego WI and Hartford WI. The heavy wet snow, and winds gusting to 35 mph, damaged or destroyed thousands of trees, and downed numerous power lines. Total damage from the storm was more than four million dollars. FORECAST (updated 12 p.m. 5/11/07)

TODAY:
Becoming partly cloudy, cooler and less humid. Lots of smoke and haze from wildfires in northern Minnesota. High 64-69. Wind northeast 10-18.

TONIGHT:
Partly cloudy and cool. Low 37-42. Wind northeast 5-10.

SATURDAY:
Mainly partly cloudy... seasonal. High 62-67. Wind east 10-15.

SATURDAY NIGHT:
Partly cloudy and cool. Low 37-42. Wind east southeast 10-15.

SUNDAY:
Becoming partly sunny and breezy. Slight chance for showers and storms after 7pm. High 69-74. Wind south 10-20 and gusty in the afternoon.

Waking up and heading outside this morning you might be able to tell that a strong cold front moved through the area last night. Yesterday the high temperatures were near record territory (in the 80s) and today it will be about 15 degrees cooler. The wind also switched direction. Yesterday it was out of the west and today it will be out of the northeast. A couple things missing from the cold front were clouds and precipitation. Most strong cold fronts have some sort of precipitation, but not this time around. All of the rain stayed to the north in Canada. Another strong cold front will move through the area on Monday evening next week. Hopefully things will be a bit different. We will have the same temperature drop and change in wind direction and also a chance of rain and thunderstorms. Monday`s cold front will have more moisture to work with and some upper level energy. Therefore I am raising the rain chance to 50% and I am hopeful that much of the area will have significant rainfall, on the order of a half inch or more.

Before Monday, things will be pretty quiet. We should have plenty of sunshine for today with high temps in the upper 60s to around 70. A few more clouds will move through tonight preventing any significant chance of frost and then the clouds should leave once again on Saturday morning leaving us with plenty of sun once again for Saturday afternoon. High temps should be in the mid 60s. Saturday night/Sunday morning is when there will likely be some patchy frost in low lying areas out in the countryside and especially in the northwoods.

By Sunday afternoon a warm front will approach northcentral Wisconsin and bring a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms and high temps should reach the upper 60s. The warm front will lead to more humid conditions for Monday with high temps in the mid 70s. After the cold front moves through Monday night, it looks like another cooldown in in the works for the middle of next week. High temps on Tuesday and Wednesday will only be in the low to mmid 60s and low temps on Wednesday and Thursday morning will be in the 30s with the threat of patchy frost. In another instnace of Murphy`s law, I just put my lemon tree outside for the season, and now there is a threat of frost this weekend and during the middle of next week. Even with the threat of frost I think the tree will be safe because I live in the middle of town where it is usually 3 or 4 degrees warmer than out in the countryside.

Weather History:
On this date in 1990 unseasonably cold weather followed in the wake of a spring storm in the north central U.S. Seven cities reported record low temperatures for the date, including Madison WI with a reading of 29 degrees. Thunderstorms produced severe weather in Kansas, Oklahoma and the northern half of Texas. Severe thunderstorms spawned four tornadoes in Texas, and produced high winds which overturned four mobile homes northwest of Abilene TX injuring ten persons. SEASONAL WEEKEND...EARLY WEEK RAIN THREAT

High pressure will protect us Saturday with quiet weather. The cloud shield over the area Saturday morning should gradually break apart as well.

The weather will start to get more active in Minnesota tonight as a warm front lifts northeast. South winds will transport increasing moisture into the boundary kicking off showers and storms. A few of those could drift across our area Sunday. However I suspect the majority of the day will be dry Sunday, but it could be on the cloudy side.

Wiscosnin will be in the warm sector of the system Monday with temperatures soaring close to 80 if we get enough sunshine. Dew points will also climb close to 60 degrees making it feel muggier. As a cold front slams into the area Monday evening, widespread thunderstorms are possible, some of which could become severe. The potential is there for a good half inch of rain or more across the region.

Cool, dry air will rush into the Upper Midwest Tuesday and Wednesday as a lobe of Canadian high pressure settles in. This should bring us plenty of sunshine from Tuesday through Friday. We may have to deal with some patchy light frost Wednesday and Thursday mornings until the air mass modifies.

There are signs of a big warmup again toward next weekend, possibly 10 degrees above normal.

WEATHER HISTORY:
On this date in 1972 - In Texas, A cloudburst dumped sixteen inches of rain north of New Braunfels sending a thirty foot wall of water down Blueders Creek into the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers washing away people, houses and automobiles. FORECAST (updated 8 a.m. 5/13/07)

TODAY:
More clouds than sun with scattered showers and an isolated thundestorm. High 62-67. Wind south-southeast 10-18 mph.

TONIGHT:
Variably cloudy with a chance of scattered showers or thunderstorms, especially north of Wausau. Low 49-54. Wind south 7-14 mph.

MONDAY:
Partly sunny, breezy, and warmer. Showers and thunderstorms developing later in the afternoon and continuing into the evening. Some storms may be severe with strong gusty winds, hail, and heavy downpours. High 79-83. Wind southwest 15-25 mph.

MONDAY NIGHT:
Scattered showers and thunderstorms likely. Low 49-54. Winds west 10-15 mph.

TUESDAY:
Lingering morning showers giving way to a partly cloudy sky. High 68-72. Wind northwest 10-15 mph.

HOPE FOR SCATTERED RAIN...VERY WARM MONDAY

As of Sunday morning there was a line of thunderstorms over western through south central Wisconsin slowly drifting east. It remains to be seen how far east and north they will survive as they are running into some very dry air. Dew points were only in the 20s over north and east Wisconsin. In any case at least we have a chance of a scattered shower or storm throughout the area through tonight as a warm front in Minnesota and Iowa lifts northeast. In fact tonight, the best chance of widespread storms will be from northeast Minnesota through Upper Michigan, where some hail producers are likely. Some of those could graze far northern Wisconsin as well.

Monday, the Badger State will be firmly entrenched in the warm sector of the system. With gusty southwest winds and some sun temperatures should soar into the 80s in many spots, perhaps only 70s in the far north where residual clouds and earlier rain chances could limit heating.

As a cold front sags into the region from the northwest toward evening, a line of heavy thunderstorms may develop. We are under a slight risk of severe storms from the Storm Prediction Center Monday afternoon and night. If storms do develop they would be capable of producing over one-half inch or rainfall.

Cooler north winds will push in Tuesday. There might be some leftover showers in the morning too. Then high pressure will settle in Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures will drop about 5 to 10 degrees below normal, so a bit of frost is possible Wednesday morning, and especially Thursday morning when the winds are forecast to be the lightest under clear skies.

In any case, southwest winds, sunshine, and warming air will be the rule late Thursay right into the weekend. It`s possible temperatures will approach the 80 degree mark again by next weekend.

WEATHER HISTORY:
On this date in 1989 - Thunderstorms developing along a warm front produced severe weather in the Southern Plains Region during the afternoon and night. A thunderstorm at Killeen TX produced wind gusts to 95 mph damaging 200 helicopters at Fort Hood causing nearly 500 million dollars damage. Another thunderstorm produced softball size hail at Hodges TX. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)
