Dont know the exact temp here in IL but we are getting hammered. Freezing rain. Power outages. The trees are breaking and falling down all over the place. It is really freaking me out. I moved here from florida in late june. we were here 2 wks when a storm came thru. Left us without power. lost the shed. Huge mess. Now this. Maybe we made a mistake moving here.

If you are a snow-lover you will have to head down to Milwaukee or Chicago to get in on the action today. Some locations in southeastern Wisconsin could end up with 10 inches of snow on the ground by the time it ends early this afternoon. It will be dry and cold once again in Nortthcentral Wisconsin. Only far northern locations in the state will have any additional snowfall as a few lake-effect snow showers move off of lake Superior. The highest chance of accumulating snow over the weekend through early next week will remain in northern Vilas, Iron, and Ashland counties and in the UP of Michigan. A series of weak storm systems will move out of Canada and reinforce the cold air while enhancing the lake effect snow. Several inches could pile up in the far north through next Tuesday. For central Wisconsin, this weather pattern will probably produce a dusting from time to time.

Even without much snow it will still feel very much like winter over the next 6 days. High temps will be in the low to mid 20s today and Saturday. From Sunday through Tuesday you may need an extra layer of clothing as high temps only climb into the upper teens and lower 20s. The cold pattern will start to break on Wednesday and Thursday of next week as the mercury rises into the mid to upper 20s. After Thursday a mild trend should take ahold with high temps mainly in the 30s through the middle of December.

It will be Deja Vu all over again for the first half of the work week. Off-and-on light snow and cold temps should persist. Another dusting could fall on Monday with high temps in the low 20s. On Tuesday it should be slightly warmer with high temps in the mid 20s. A weak storm system moving through Tuesday night could bring an inch or so accumulation to the area. It will be our only chance for some "holiday" white in some time because dry weather will take over late next week.

I live in Alaska....come on up, it is warm!! :D It has been so warm and there has been so little snow so far. Wierd for us, been +20, we are talking heat wave. Should be -25 or -30 by now. Loving it. :lol:

TODAY:
Mainly cloudy with occasional flurries later on today. Lake effect snow showers becoming more numerous for Vilas and Iron counties. Temps will steadily fall from the early morning highs in the upper 20's to near 20 by noon and eventually into the teens by 5pm. Winds northwest 10-20.

TONIGHT:
Variably cloudy with lake effect snow showers likely for Vilas and Iron counties. Accumulations 3" to 6" by tomorrow morning. Lows -4 to +1. Winds northwest 10-15. Wind chills running -10 to -20.


So yesterday was the first below zero morning of the season and tonight will be close again, but after Thursday it will start to feel like Fall again (or should I say Spring...it isn't January so it can't be a January thaw...maybe a December thaw). In any case, it will probably warm up enough to melt all the snow that is currently on the ground in central Wisconsin. A few spots in the northwoods have more snow because of the lake effect so the snowcover will probably stick around in those locations.

I am getting ahead of myself. First we have to get through today and Thursday. A strong cold front moved through the area last night and it will usher in another blast of artic air today. High tempps will be in the mid to upper 20s early on, then fall down to around 20 in the afternoon. Temps will eventually drop down close to zero overnight. More sunshine will develop on Thursday but it will still be very chilly with high temps only in the mid teens.

What about snowfall? For most of the area it will just be a few flurries today and tonight. For the far north there could be heavy lake effect snow. In northern parts of Ashland, Iron, and Vilas counties there could be 5 to 10 inches. Over a foot is possible in the UP. The strong north wind could even bring an inch or two down into Oneida and Forest counties.

Now back to the big snow-melting warm-up for the weekend. The warm-up will begin on Friday. Temps will start out in single digits and then warm up to around 30 in the afternoon. A southwest wind will warm things up even more on Saturday. With enough sunshine, high temps could hit 40 in a few spots. Most areas should at least reach the upper 30s. From Sunday through Tuesday there will be a few more clouds blocking out the sun but high temps should still be in the low to mid 30s.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Does the beauty outweigh the cold? My dream trip is to go to Alaska!
