: what is the weather like where you are?

TODAY:
Partly sunny far north with mostly sunny conditions elsewhere. Cold. Highs 10-15. Winds northwest 10-15. Wind chill values -10 to +5 today.

TONIGHT:
Mainly clear and cold again. Lows -4 to +1. Winds west 5-10.

Winds Die Down...Frigid Night

Bright sunshine was the rule across the region during the day on Thursday, however it didn't do a whole lot to warm things up. Many locations only managed to make it into the mid teens during the afternoon, however with the brisk northwesterly wind, it felt more like it was in the single digits below zero. There is some good news on a couple of fronts as we move toward the end of the week. First off, the wind should slacken a bit tonight, and also a warm up is in the works.

As for tonight it will be mostly clear and quite cold. Along with a diminishing wind, readings should tumble back to the -5 to 0 degree range. Bright and somewhat milder for tomorrow with afternoon readings climbing into the upper 20s to near 30. Saturday is almost going to feel balmy in comparison to the way it was today, with a mostly sunny sky. Highs soaring into the upper 30s to lower 40s.

There is the chance of a few flurries in the north for Sunday, otherwise partly sunny and still a bit milder than normal. Readings to wrap up the weekend Sunday are expected to hit the mid to upper 30s.

The weather pattern should remain tranquil through the early part of next week with just a chance of flurries or snow showers. Readings should be around seasonal averages in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

Partly sunny. Wind: SW 10-15

As you step out the door this morning you might say to yourself "here we go again, another bitter cold day". That will be true during the morning, but when you get out of school or work this afternoon it will be quite different. High temps should reach the upper 20s this afternoon, which will be about 15 degrees warmer than yesterday. If that is not warm enough for you, just wait until Saturday when it could be 15 degrees warmer than today. You heard right. With enough sunshine and a southwest wind the high temps on Saturday should be in the low 40s. A few more clouds will develop on Sunday along with a slight chance of drizzle or flurries so the temps will not be quite as warm as on Saturday but the mercury should still reach the upper 30s.

Preparing For The Cold
Obviously make sure your vehicle is mechanically ready for the winter and pay attention to the forecast.

If you must travel, it's always good to have some blankets, coats and boots in the car. Something else you may not think of, know of a tow truck company to help you out. "Have that number with you 24/7 in the car if you would happen to be towed you can call that number right away and get time on the way even though you might not have any help coming for awhile," says Lt. Dennis Saager with the Wausau Police Department.

Now you could bring water or fluids with you, but Lieutenant Saager says you can't rely on that because they'll often freeze.

Of course staying warm in these extreme temperatures is very important.

Area doctors say the biggest concern is frostbite. Typically your nose, ears, toes and fingers will be the first to suffer the effects of being in the cold.

With temperatures in the single digits exposed skin can suffer from frostbite in less than twenty minutes, but there are different levels of frostbite.

"You can think about frostbite like a burn. There are first degree burns, second degree, that kind of thing. Frostbite is similar to that as far as the degrees and in order to classify it you have to wait until the skin is thawed out," says Dr. Ronelle Moe.

Extreme cases of frostbite could even result in amputation. Frostbite isn't the only concern though, being out in the cold forces your body to work harder. If you already have other medical conditions the cold could make them worse.

Partly sunny early then increasing afternoon clouds. Wind: South 5-10

The snowmelt will continue over the next few days but it won't be all sunshine like it was yesterday. The last bit of sunshine we will see is this morning. You can expect increasing clouds this afternoon and grey skies will prevail for most of the upcoming work week. Along with the grey skies will come chances of light precipitation. Since temps are so mild we could end up with a mixture of rain and snow as each little storm system passes through. It will start tonight with a chance of drizzle or freezing drizzle. The chance of drizzle and cloudy skies will continue on Monday with high temps in the mid to upper 30s. More rain is likely on Tuesday with high temps remaining in the mid to upper 30s. We should get a break in the dreary weather Tuesday night into Wednesday morning but then another couple weak weather systems will bring a chance of light snow showers Wednesday night and Thursday night. Overall, I don't expect any acummulating snow this week. It will be just enough to be a nuisance - just enough to make the roads a little slippery from time to time.

Temps will cool down a little later this week with highs in the low to mid 30s. The next chance of colder winter-like temps will be early next week. There could be a couple days with high temps in the 20s. Along with a little colder weather will come some off-and-on chances of snow but it still doesn't look like anything "big" is on the horizon which means the chances of a white Christmas are still iffy.

Tuesday

Low: 35°
Light rain likely in the morning tapering to drizzle in the afternoon. Wind: SE to S 5-10
I have been talking about the El Nino weather pattern over the last couple of weeks and what to expect during the winter season. One thing I mentioned is that there will be a lot of "borderline" light precipitation events.
By "borderline" I mean on the cusp between rain or snow, snow or sleet, rain or freezing rain. This will usually prompt the National Weather Service to issue a lot of winter weather advisories, freezing rain advisories, or freezing drizzle advisories. We have had 2 such advisories in the last week, even though not much bad weather developed. The most recent freezing rain advisory was issued last night. Air temperatures remained well above freezing but there may have been a few ground surfaces and roadways around 32 degrees so the Advisory was issued as a precaution. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

It is the time of year we should expect snow and colder weather. Instead , because of El Nino, this week will be filled with mild temps and more rain than snow. Today will be a wet one, especially during the morning commute. By this afternoon it will look like the skies could open up a downpour at any minute but only drizzle will be present. The two best words to describe this Tuesday are "grey and damp." Along with the dreary weather will come very mild temps for this time of year - highs will reach the low 40s.

A couple weak weather systems will pass to our north on Wednesday afternoon and again on Thursday afternoon. These will be close enough to bring a chance of flurries or sprinkles to the northwoods while central Wisconsin stays dry. Another weak front will pass through the area on Saturday and bring with it a chance of light rain showers. The next "real" storm that could affect the area with heavier rain or snow will approach Wisconsin next week Monday.

Through the period high temps should remain about 10 degrees above normal. Highs on Wednesday will reach the upper 30s. Low 40s are possible on Thursday. From Friday through Sunday high temps wiil be slightly cooler but still well above normal - in the mid to upper 30s.
