unwanted sweepstakes pop-up

I have been getting these so much and it's very distracting. I don't know how to block pop-ups...can anyone help? I am discontinuing entering the following because I always get one of these full page pop-ups when I enter: MyPlingo...Family covers...Momsmenu...Mongobongo...and MaxBeauty. Sometimes they cause a red exclamation point at the bottom of the page saying "unauthenticated" which makes me think it's a hoax. Any help with pop-ups or deleting cookies would be appreciated.

For Internet Explorer 8. At the top, click on tools. Scroll down to pop-up blocker, and click on pop-up blocker settings. Find the drop down for blocking level and change the setting to high (block all pop-ups).

This'll block the pop-ups from the sites you mentioned. It'll also have the unwanted effect of blocking some sweeps that use a pop-up for the entry form. http://www.scotchbrand.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/ScotchBrand/Scotch/Offers/Form/ is an example of a sweep that uses a pop-up for the entry form. For those sweeps that are blocked, you'll get a pop-up blocked notice. Click on the notice and select always allow pop-ups from this site.

As an alternate, you can keep you settings where they are and just close the pop-ups as they occur. They're annoying, but harmless.

To delete cookies, browsing history etc., click on tools as you did for pop-ups. Scroll down to internet options and click on it. Find delete and click on it. You'll get a new screen. Check the box in front of each option you want to clear (cookies, browsing history etc.) and then click on the delete button. If you're still using IE7, it's a somewhat similar procedure.

I can't advise you on Firefox, Google Chrome or any other Browsers, as I don't use 'em.

Thanks, Curmudgeon, for the advice on deleting cookies. I think some contests say that you have to accept cookies to participate so I'll have to think about it a little. beedyr

I delete all my cookies everyday and I haven't had any trouble entering sweeps. You are still accepting the cookies, just not keeping them. (I never keep cookies very long, I eat them :crazytongue:)

I don't get any pop ups with my pop-up blockers on. Also, if you have IE7 or above, you can download IE7Pro which has many features plus an ad blocker.

I'm not sure if these intrusions are "pop-ups" or "pop-unders", but I can't prevent them (with my limited abilities and AdBlock), so I don't enter their promotions. Maybe, they'll realize lower participation and stop them. Fingers crossed! :cussing:

Myplingo, MongoBongo, Family Covers, Deco Galore, VacationMag and MaxBeauty have been removed from the site. None of the site owners replied to me when I asked about these promotions.

No complaints here.

ET Online Media - 500.00 Cash Sweepstakes, ET Online Media - 1000 Cash Sweepstakes, ET Online Media - 750 Cash Sweepstakes and ET Online Media - 1500 Cash Sweepstakes also have the promotional pop-up.

Thanks for all the replies. I truly didn't notice that those contests were all gone today but... it's a good thing.

Should we delete any and all sweeps with popups? I have my popup blocker on and don't have a problem with popups. :) Yes, I get an occasional popup but not to the point that they are bothersome. If you have a problem, just don't enter the sweeps, instead of complaining them off the site when there are some of us who have no problems. Just my opinion.

Judge, I think in this case it was a matter of "unauthenticated" popups that made it look like there is something hokey going on with the site. Not just popups in general. :)

I'm saying I don't get the popups whether "unauthenticated" or not. Maybe the people that do get them don't have effective anti-virus software or something, I don't know because I don't know how everyone else has their computers set, nor do I know that much about computers in general. But I intend to let it go now since I seem to be the only one without a problem (or at least willing to speak up). Have a great day everyone and win big! :)

Why should we care?

This site is free. The revenue produced from advertising dollars and other sources is what keeps this site viable, and free to use by sweepers.

SA must compete for advertising dollars. Advertisers like exposure. The more visitors (hits) a site has the greater the probability that a company will want to pay to have an ad placed there.

It wasn't the pop-ups per se, it was the nature of the pop-ups. They were full page promotions for sites competing with SA that were snuck in thru' the back door without compensating SA.

I doubt that SA would accept advertising from a competitor, paid for or not. You wouldn't expect to see an ad for ford sweepstakes in the lobby of a Chevrolet Dealership would you?

They knew that the sweeps would be presented to the public via various sweeps listing sites like SA. To attach their promotion to the sweep and have it appear on a competing website for free was underhanded and deceitfull. It was an attempt to increase their exposure (and membership) to sweepers, thereby increasing their attractiveness to advertisers.

For me, it speaks volumes about the character and integrity of the two sites in question.

The Big thing with these sites is they really had "no product" but they were giving away
big prizes. Then when I tried to communicate with the owners none of them got back to me. Since they submitted these sweepstakes
themselves I considered this to be highly suspicious. ( they actually tried to submit a new one today which was rejected )

So this wasn't really about sponsorship in any way. Just a security or possible fraud concern.

Thank you,

-Ken
