Fall is Here

What a change in the weather over the weekend! Fall truly arrived in one day. Last Friday temps started out in the 70s but by the end of the day it was only around 50 in the northwoods and high temps settled into the low 60s on Saturday and Sunday. There was even a bit of frost in the northwoods on Sunday morning. Ashland and Eagle River reported lows of 30 and Land o' Lakes had 28.

For the beginning of the work week Fall will stick around. A slow moving low pressure system will travel from Iowa into Illinois this afternoon. It is close enough to bring a few light showers to the southern half of the area (mainly south of highway 64). Skies will remain cloudy in much of the area and with an east wind high temps will only be around 60. The storm system will still be close enough to the area to produce a few showers tonight and tomorrow morning, and thus the clouds will also stick around. Highs on Tuesday will be in the low 60s. The only place that might have a bit of sunshine today or tomorrow is the northwoods.

Finally on Wednesday the clouds should break up and the mercury should rise. It looks like sunny Fall weather will develop from Wednesday all the way through Saturday. High temps will be in the low 70s Wednesday, in the mid 70s Thursday, and then top out in the upper 70s Friday and Saturday. The next chance of rain looks to be Sunday.

Don't hate me, the weather is always beautiful and perfect, if you can stand the 90% humidity. Everything's green and beautiful, truly paradise. I see the sunset over a distant island in the ocean, pinks and oranges, every evening from my front porch. I try not to take it for granted since I'm the 4th generation born and raised here.

Since I relocated the weather is VERY different.

It's muggy and rainy today. My kids woke up late and I had to walk them to school today because I don't have the truck. It was so funny, it was sprinkling and I kept telling them "hurry, hurry it's going to rain on your heads" poor babies was walking up a hilly road to get there lol. Anyhoo, they made it without being rained on with luck. It sprinkled harder on my way back but, didn't start pouring until I was inside. :D

A Threat of Frost for Tonight

Today certainly had the feel of a late October day than that of the last few days of the summer season. We were stuck in on the backside of an area of low pressure that helped draw down chilly air from the northwest, along with scattered showers throughout the afternoon. As we move into early this evening, I do expect the showers and drizzle to wind down and skies to give way to partly cloudy conditions later tonight. This is great if you want to do some stargazing, but not what you want to hear if you still have plants outside. A clearing sky is part of the equation that could very well lead to areas of frost by the morning hours. The other factor that will be the key is how frost occurs is how much the winds die down toward morning. If the wind does go calm or under 5 mph, frost will be widespread across the region. However, if it stays at 5 mph or above through daybreak, the coverage of frost will be more scattered. The sure bet of frost is going to be in sheltered areas that typically are colder on clear mornings and a good portion of the Northwoods. The exception in the north will be if some clouds develop off of Lake Superior overnight, which could help readings stay just above freeze.

Anyway you look at it, the way to go is to take in those plants you may have outside tonight or to cover up the other plants that are in the ground. On a more positive note, Wednesday is going to be a great day in the Wisconsin River Valley. Look for it to be sunny to partly cloudy right through the afternoon with highs rebounding into the mid 50s to around 60 degrees. Thursday may start with some sun, but clouds again will be on the increase as our next storm system will be moving out of the Rockies and in our direction. Showers will become possible late in the day on Thursday, with a higher risk of wet weather Thursday night and for much of Friday. Unlike last week, the weather for the Friday night football games is not going to be that great. Plan now to need the rain gear and a warm coat if you are going to be heading out to the gridiron. (Green Bay Packers)

As the weekend gets started on Saturday, showers could still be lingering in the morning. However, as the day wears on, sunshine should begin to break through the clouds. The better half of the weekend will be on Sunday with a partly cloudy sky and readings getting back to around 60. The long range forecast into early next week holds out promise for temperatures to get back to seasonal levels, and possibly even breaking the 70 degree mark by the middle of next week.

Have a great night!

Frosty Nights

Some areas experieced their first touch of frost this morning and tomorrow morning may be the second. Cool crisp Fall air has moved into the region. It is also a bit drier. Thus, we should have more sunshine today with high temps in the mid to upper 50s. The skies will be clear and winds light tonight and that is a perfect set-up for more widespread frost. I don't think it will quite reach 32 in town (I am forecasting 33) but most of the countryside will have a good chance of frost. It is close enough to freezing that I will be moving my lemon tree inside today, and it will stay inside for the rest of the season. Thursday will start out with hazy sunshine but then the clouds will increase during the afternoon signalling another spell of rainy weather. The rain that begins Thursday evening could last off-and-on all the way through Sunday. So be sure to get any outdoor chores done today or Thursday.

The heaviest most steady rain will develop after midnight Thursday and continue through early afternoon Friday. For Friday night and much of Saturday it will be lighter, more like drizzle or sprinkles. Another storm system will move into the midwest late Saturday afternoon and could bring another shot of steady rain that lasts all the way into Sunday morning. The path of this second storm isn't exactly certain at this point so we will put the rain chances at 50/50 for later in the weekend. The storminess should clear out late Sunday afternoon and by early next week much nicer Fall weather should develop.

The one good thing about this next round of stormy weather is that it will not be too chilly. High temps should be around 60 for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Highs will drop a little on Sunday into the middle and upper 50s before rebounding into the lower and middle 60s for Monday and Tuesday.

One question you might be wondering about is if the next warm spell can be called "Indian Summer". The warm weather pattern called "Indian Summer" is any warm spell that occurs after the first frost. The trouble is defining what constitutes the first forst and how warm does it have to get before it is called Indian Summer. In far northern Wisconsin it has already dropped below 32 twice this month and this morning is another frosty one, but most of the area has not experienced frost yet. Tonight it might not officially freeze in town but most of the countryside should have frost. My feeling is that if more than 50% of the area has frost tonight then it will count as the first frost (even if it doesn't freeze in town). That means the next warm spell would be Indian Summer. How warm does it have to get? Myself along with a constortium central Wisconsin radio DJs decided that it has to be at least 10 degrees above normal before it can be called Indian Summer.
