Super Fall Weather

Severe thunderstorms and tornado watches in October? It doesn't happen too often but it is not unprecedented. There were several watches and warnings posted for our area last night but there were not too many reports of hail or damaging winds and no official tornado touchdowns. Most of the hail and wind reports were in western Wisconsin from Dunn county down into Jackson county. There was one report of large hail in Oconto county. Some heavy downpours occurred but here at the TV station we only had about 0.50 inches. Any lingering showers should end early this morning and the clouds will clear out during the afternoon. Even with sunny skies later today the temperature will not go up too far because of gusty north winds. High temps will be in the upper 50s. Clear skies and light winds will lead to widespread frost late tonight into Thursday morning. It might even get down to 32 in town. After a frosty start, Thursday should turn out to be a very nice Fall day with mostly sunny skies, light winds, and highs in the upper 50s. Friday will be very similar to Thursday, only a little warmer in the afternoon. Highs should reach the mid 60s. I'll let you in on a little secret. My favorite days of the year are the ones just like what are forecast for Thursday and Friday - a touch of frost in the morning then sunny with highs around 60. That is why I used the word "super" in the title.

If you are the type that likes warmer Fall weather, then you are in luck, Saturday should be another Indian Summer day with gusty south winds, partly sunny skies, and highs in the mid to upper 70s. The warm weather will not last too long because another cold front will enter the artea on Sunday. This front will not have a lot of energy or moisture so there is only a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms on Sunday. The main thing you will notice is it will be much cooler than Saturday with high only in the mid 60s. It will be cooler on Sunday but mid 60s is still above normal for this time of year. The temperatures will drop even further on Monday and Tuesday. Highs will only reach the mid to upper 50s early next week. Still, this will be pretty typical for the middle of October. Along with the "cool" weather we should have plenty of sunshine.

It still doesn't look like there will be any "real" cool weather (like highs in the 40s) for at least the next 7 to 10 days. Make the best of it. Even though we are expecting a mild El Nino winter, nothing can compare to sunny mild weather in early October.

Big Changes on the Way

This is the time of year you would expect the weather to get a little cooler. As each day passes we slip a little closer to winter. To the enjoyment of everyone, this week is bucking that trend. We started out with temps near 80 on Monday. It turned a little cooler during the middle of the week, and now we are on an upward trend once again. Sunny skies should prevail for this Friday with high temps in the mid 60s. On Saturday a gusty south wind should push the mercury all the way up into the mid 70s. Sunday will also turn out pretty good with highs in the mid 60s. A cold front moving into the area Sunday afternoon could produce a couple of windely scattered showers but it shouldn't be anything heavy.

I know I say this all the time, but this time around it is extra poignant. Be sure to enjoy the warm weather while it lasts. This weekend will be warm and next week will turn much colder. After the front moves through Sunday afternoon the wind will turn to the northwest. This will lead to high temps on Monday only being in the upper 50s. That is not too bad. Tuesday will also be partly sunny with highs in the upper 50s. It is the middle of the week that could turn ugly. Right now the long range outlook is calling for a very strong low pressure system to move down from Cananda and bring our first taste of winter. I mentioned this already yesterday and today the computer models are showing the same thing so there is a little more confidence in this scenario. It will cloud up on Wednesday and rain will fall as the storm first moves into the area. High temps should be near 50. Wednesday afternoon or Wednesday night a strong cold front will follow the low pressure system into the area and usher in the coldest temps of the season so far. In the worst case scenario high temps might only be in the upper 30s with a few snow showers on Thursday. The best case is mid to upper 40s with a few sprinkles. The chances for measurable snow are very slim because the center of the low pressure system will not travel far enough south into Wisconsin. The cold spell will probably last into Saturday of next week before things moderate once again.

: what is the weather like where you are?

We start out today with Fall weather but we will end up with winter by late afternoon. A strong storm system is developing in the Great Lakes region of the country and it will usher in the coldest air of the season so far. Light rain this morning will turn to light snow showers this afternoon as the winds turn to the northwest. Do get too excited about the snow, it won't add up to very much. All of the indredients for heavy snow are present but the timing is off. The moisture producing the rain this morning will be moving away from the area at the same time the drier colder northwest wind moves in. The main energy and lift of the storm system will also be moving north of the area by the time the cold air arrives. So the window of opportunity for accumulating snow is short. If it is going to happen, it would be from midday through about mid-afternoon. Even then, I would only expect a dusting up to a half inch. A better opportunity for heavy snow will occur in far northern Wisconsin and in the UP of Michigan where winter storm warnings have been posted for this afternoon and tonight. Those areas will have more moisture off of Lake Superior. 3 to 6 inches is possible in the hills of northern Iron and Ashland counties. Even there the snow will not last too long because the wind will turn more to west late tonight and that is not a favorable direction for lake effect snow. Of greater concern is the wind and cold temperatures. Be sure to bundle up. The temperature will be falling from the mid 40s this morning to the low 30 late this afternoon. The northwest wind will be about 20 to 30 mph.

As mentioned above, the wind will turn more westerly late tonight and stay that way through Friday. Unfortunately the wind speed will also stay around 20 to 30 mph over the next couple of days, so it will feel quite cold. High temps on Thursday will be in the mid 30s. On Friday the mercury should climb up to around 40. Along with the cold there will be a continued chance of intermittent flurries or light snow showers through Friday but no accumulation is expected.

Over the weekend things will get a little better. Some sun should break out from time to time on Saturday and Sunday and high temperatures will climb a bit. Temps should be in the mid to upper 40s Saturday afternoon and in the low 50s on Sunday. Also, the wind will die down over the weekend and that will make a world of difference.
