The weather pattern that exists right now across the U.S. is called a ;blocking pattern;. It is called this when the low and high pressure systems do not move for more than 2 or 3 days. In our case it looks like high pressure will remain in our area for 6 days. That is counting from last Saturday all the way through Thursday. It might even last through Friday. The one thing I am wondering is why we always get the high pressure system "blocked" over our area. When will we ever end up with low pressure and rainfall for 6 straight days? It is not that I enjoy persistent cloudy wet weather, it is just that I am upset at our lack of rainfall. Things are OK for now but by Friday evening (the next chance of rain) things will be getting pretty dusty around here. Also, in Wausau the precipitation for the year is almost four inches below normal.
So it looks like the blocking pattern will hold for today, tomorrow, and most of Friday. That means more sunshine and warm temps. High temperatures should reach the mid to upper 80s today through Friday. The blocking pattern should weaken just enough to allow a cool front into the area Friday evening. This front will then stall over the northern half of the state on Saturday, and then move back to the north as a warm front on Sunday. Even though this front will be quite weak, it should have enough energy to produce a couple scattered thunderstorms over the weekend. So, at this point I am going to call for a slight chance of thunderstorms from Friday evening all the way through Sunday. If anything does develop, it should not last too long, so outdoor plans for the weekend should be OK. High temps will be in the low to mid 80s on Saturday and in the mid 80s on Sunday.
A stronger cold front will approach the area on Monday and linger through Tuesday morning. So, if we don`t receive any rain over the weekend, there is still hope! Once the front moves through northcentral Wisconsin Tuesday morning, it looks like we will be in for a spell of cooler weather. By the middle of next week, high temps will be in the low to mid 70s.
