Check further down in the article for a summary of the severe weather from Thursday. First let us look at the weekend forecast.

It looks like things will settle down for a couple of days. The weather will be a little cooler today with high temps only in the upper 60s to around 70. A few clouds will drift through this morning and then we should experience some sunshine for the afternoon. A gusty northwest wind of 15 to 25 mph will add to the refreshing feel of this Friday. The wind will be a little lighter on Saturday but still blow out of the southwest at about 10 to 18 mph. A high pressure system should provice us with plenty of sunshine so high temps should reach the mid to upper 70s.

On Sunday a weak cool front will approach from the north so once again I have to add a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. Thankfully the chance of severe weather looks pretty slim. Highs temps should reach the upper 70s to around 80 on Sunday.

Early next week a warmer and more humid trend will develop. South winds will continue from Monday through Wednesday and high temps should be in the upper 70s to low 80s each day. A slow moving low pressure system will move from the northern mountain states toward the midwest and this will bring a chance of thunderstorms each day from Monday all the way through Thursday. It is too early to speculate on the chance of severe weather but we could end up with significant amounts of rain (over an inch) in many parts of the area.

Severe Weather Recap:

There were at least 5 reports of tornadoes in northcentral Wisconsin with two of them causing significant damage. The worst tornado and the one that potentially stayed on the ground the longest started in northern Menominee County, created significant damage just a couple miles south of White Lake in southeastern Langlade county and then moved on toward Lakewood and Mountain in Oconto county. We won`t know for sure if it was a continuous tornado path until the National Weather Service does an ariel survey later today.

The other significant tornado occurred in southeastern Marathon county in the Town of Reid near Bevent. Several houses and sheds were damaged. The tornado may have touched down a couple of times just east of Mosinee, then around Bevent, and again a little south of Hatley before lifting back up into the clouds. Again, we will know more once the National Weather Service takes a survey later today.

The other reports of tornadoes were only brief touchdowns, one a couple miles east of Thorp, one in Vesper, and a third one on the south side of Wisconsin Rapids. The bigger story in Wisconsin Rapids was the humungous hail. Baseball and softball sized hail fell in much of the city. It is the biggest hail that has fallen in the area in several years...some of of the biggest I have seen in our area. One viewer took a picture of a hail stone that was slightly over 4 inches in diameter! Hundreds of cars were damaged by the hail and holes were punched in the skylights of the Rapids Mall.

FORECAST (updated 8 a.m. 6/9/07)

TODAY:
Plenty of sunshine, warmer and not as breezy. High 74-79. Wind southwest 10-15 mph.

TONIGHT:
A starlit sky and not as cool. Low 49-54. Wind light from the south.

SUNDAY:
Partly cloudy with a chance of an afternoon showers or a thunderstorm north of Wausau. High 78-83. Wind south-southwest 7-14 mph.

SUNDAY NIGHT:
A lingering shower or storm possible in the evening in the north otherwise partly cloudy. Low 56-60. Wind light from the southeast.

MONDAY:
A fair amount of sunshine, warm, and a bit humid. High 82-86. Wind south-southwest 7-14 mph.
Just in time for the weekend, high pressure will continue to hang out across the western Great Lakes for today, providing for plenty of sunshine and a warmer afternoon. Unlike yesterday, where the winds were still gusting up to 20 mph, the breeze today will be a bit gentler, running only about 10 to 15 mph out of the southwest. Afternoon readings should top out in the mid to upper 70s. A quiet night for tonight and not quite as cool as it was for this morning as readings drift back into the lower 50s.

Sunday a warm front is expected to lift north through the region during the afternoon and may trigger a few showers or a thunderstorm in the Northwoods after 2pm. Otherwise the rest of us will probably remain dry with highs inching just above the 80 degree mark in many spots. I do have some good news when it comes to the first half of the new work week. Indications are now that our friendly neighborhood high pressure ridge should be sticking around in the western Ohio River Valley, keeping our next chance of showers or storms at bay until Wednesday or perhaps Thursday. However, more humid air will be building as the new week goes along, meaning the dew point values should be running in the upper 50s to around 60. Not unbearable, but certainly noticeable. You may have to get the air conditioner up and running before too long as well.

FORECAST (updated 8:30 p.m. 6/9/07)

TODAY:
Sunny to partly cloudy with a small chance of an afternoon shower or a thunderstorm in the north. High 80-85. Wind south-southwest 10-15 mph.

TONIGHT:
Mostly clear and comfortable. Low 56-60. Wind light from the southeast.

MONDAY:
A fair amount of sunshine, warm, and a bit humid. High 83-87. Wind south 10-15 mph.

MONDAY NIGHT:
Partly cloudy and warm. Low 58-62. Wind light from the southeast.

TUESDAY:
More sun than clouds, warm and humid. High 83-87. Wind south-southeast 7-14 mph

High pressure kept much of the Upper Midwest mostly sunny and mild today with highs in the middle to upper 70s. With daytime heating and low instability, there were a few showers and an isolated thunderstorm across the northwestern half of the state, but those will quickly diminish after sunset. The good news is that even though this high will slip off to our east, it should still be close enough to keep most of the area dry and warm through the remainder of the weekend. It was still breezy today, but not like yesterday where winds were gusting up to 20 mph. Winds will taper more tonight and for Sunday to around 10-15 mph out of the southwest. An early light shower in parts of NW Wisconsin can`t be ruled out; otherwise there will be just a few high clouds overnight. Lows tonight will fall back into the lower 50s.

On Sunday a weak frontal system will try to slide south towards the Badger State, but it won`t quite make it all the way through. Most places will be under a mostly to partly sunny sky on Sunday with southern portions receiving more sunshine. Across the Northwoods, the front may be close enough by to spark an afternoon shower or thunderstorm, but it won`t be anything too significant. Highs will be warmer than Saturday – into the upper 70s to around 80 degrees. The mainly dry weather should continue into the early part of the week as the front pushes back north. Expect plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures and southerly breezes making it feel almost like summer! Highs on Monday will run in the lower 80s.

The frontal system will slide back south again for the remainder of the week, but it still won`t cross through the Badger State. Instead it`ll be close enough by that we will see the chance for showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon during the period from Tuesday through Saturday. As a couple disturbances roll along the front, it may give us a better chance for showers and storms, particularly on Thursday and possibly next Saturday. Since the majority if not the entire area will be south of the front, warm and somewhat humid air will persist and temperatures will run anywhere from the upper 70s to lower 80s. Dew point values will only be running in the upper 50s to near 60 so the humidity will be noticeable, but not unbearable

It looks like it is a feast or famine weather scenario. The last week of May and the first week of June were a bit wetter then normal for most of the area. It rained somewhere in the area everyday for alomst 2 weeks. Now it is back to the dry weather. The viewing area is caught between two low pressure systems. One is along the east coast and one is over the northern Rockies. These weather systems will barely move all week. In between lies high pressure and this high pressure will bring sunny skies and warm temps all the way through Friday and possibly into the weekend. It no rain develops until late in the weekend or early next week, the area will once again be on the edge of drought. On a positive note, while I was fishing this weekend I noticed a lot of farmers had cut down some hay. The saying goes ;make hay while the sunshines;. There should be no trouble with that this week.

So the fine details, the day to day forecast, is pretty simple. You can expect mostly sunny skies through Wednesday, then partly sunny skies from Thursday through Sunday. The chances of precipitation are slim. The highest chance (right now only at 30%) is on Sunday evening. Otherwise there is only a slight chance of a thunderstorms late Friday and on Saturday.

High temps will be in the mid 80s all week and then maybe fall in the the low 80s on Sunday if there is a bit more cloudcover and some scattered thunderstorms.

When will this pattern change? Hopefully next week. Right now the extended forecast models inicate temps getting a little cooler with a couple of cold fronts moving through the area. This should be seasonal temps and a couple chance of rain next week.

Update on the snowmelt contest:
Thursday May 24th was the winning date. The R-store gift cards were mailed last Friday (the 8th of June) so the winners should be getting them this week. Since more than 50 people won, each person won about 9.00. Thanks to the R-store management, each of the winners will take home a little more. The R-store management kicked the prize up to an even 10 bucks.

Weather History:
On this date in On this date in 1842 a late season snowstorm struck New England. Snow fell during the morning and early afternoon, accumulating to a depth of ten to twelve inches at Irasburg VT. Berlin NH was blanketed with eleven inches of snow during the day. Snow whitened the higher peaks of the Appalachians as far south as Maryland.

Mother Nature is once again leaving us hanging out to dry here in northcentral Wisconsin. We could use some rain right about now. A good half to one inch would be quite nice. Unfortunately, Mother Nature could care less. It looks like high pressure will dominate the scene around the Great Lakes for the next four to five days. That means sunny skies and warm temps. By the time the next good chance of rain rolls around (late Sunday or Monday) it will be fairly dusty once again. Right here in Wausau we are more than three inches below normal on precipitation for the year and the same goes for most locations in northcentral Wisconsin. By the end of this dry spell we will be more than four inches below normal.

So the forecast is pretty simple through Thursday: sunny warm days and clear comfortable nights. High temps should be in the mid to upper 80s from today through Thursday. Low temps at night will range from the mid 50s to low 60s.

On Friday a weak cool front will try to move into the Wisconsin from the northwest. It might just move far enough south to produce an isolated shower or thunderstorm in our area by late afternoon. Knowing our luck, I am not counting on it. There will probably be a few more clouds on Friday and some of those will still be around over the weekend, so high temps will be just a degree or two cooler, in the low to mid 80s.

A stronger storm system should move through the area on Sunday night and Monday, giving us a higher chance of rain and thunderstorms. High temps should also cool down a bit on Monday with the mercury reaching the upper 70s to around 80. A slightly cooler trend will then persist through the middle of next week with highs in the 70s.

Weather History:
On this date in 1947 a heavy wet snow blanketed much of southern and central Wyoming, and gave many places their heaviest and latest snow of record. Totals included 18.4 inches at Lander, 8.7 inches at Cheyenne, and 4.5 inches at Casper.

FORECAST (updated 12:00 p.m. 6/13/07)

TODAY:
Mostly sunny and still warm. High 83-88. Wind south 5-15.

TONIGHT:
Few clouds, still mild. Low 57-62. Wind southeast 5.

THURSDAY:
Partly cloudy, breezy and still warm. High 85-90. Wind south 10-15.

THURSDAY NIGHT:
Partly cloudy with a stray thunderstorm late out west. Low 60-65. Wind south southeast 5.

FRIDAY:
Partly sunny, breezy and more humid. Storms possible after 5pm. High 82-87. Wind southwest 10-20.

The weather pattern that exists right now across the U.S. is called a ;blocking pattern;. It is called this when the low and high pressure systems do not move for more than 2 or 3 days. In our case it looks like high pressure will remain in our area for 6 days. That is counting from last Saturday all the way through Thursday. It might even last through Friday. The one thing I am wondering is why we always get the high pressure system "blocked" over our area. When will we ever end up with low pressure and rainfall for 6 straight days? It is not that I enjoy persistent cloudy wet weather, it is just that I am upset at our lack of rainfall. Things are OK for now but by Friday evening (the next chance of rain) things will be getting pretty dusty around here. Also, in Wausau the precipitation for the year is almost four inches below normal.

So it looks like the blocking pattern will hold for today, tomorrow, and most of Friday. That means more sunshine and warm temps. High temperatures should reach the mid to upper 80s today through Friday. The blocking pattern should weaken just enough to allow a cool front into the area Friday evening. This front will then stall over the northern half of the state on Saturday, and then move back to the north as a warm front on Sunday. Even though this front will be quite weak, it should have enough energy to produce a couple scattered thunderstorms over the weekend. So, at this point I am going to call for a slight chance of thunderstorms from Friday evening all the way through Sunday. If anything does develop, it should not last too long, so outdoor plans for the weekend should be OK. High temps will be in the low to mid 80s on Saturday and in the mid 80s on Sunday.

A stronger cold front will approach the area on Monday and linger through Tuesday morning. So, if we don`t receive any rain over the weekend, there is still hope! Once the front moves through northcentral Wisconsin Tuesday morning, it looks like we will be in for a spell of cooler weather. By the middle of next week, high temps will be in the low to mid 70s.

Weather History:
On this date in 1907 the temperature at Tamarack, CA, dipped to 2 degrees above zero, the lowest reading of record for June for the U.S. The high that day was 30 degrees. Tamarack received 42 inches of snow between the 10th and the 13th. On the 13th the snow depth was 130 inches.

POLLEN COUNT
The Grass Pollen Count for Friday is 27, which is high. (Courtesy: Marshfield Clinic--Wausau Center)

FORECAST (updated 11:55 a.m. 6/15/07)

TODAY:
Partly cloudy, hot, and a bit humid. Near record highs possible in Wausau (the record is 89 set in 1994). High 86-91. Wind southwest 10-15 mph.

TONIGHT:
Partly cloudy with a chance of showers and storms, mainly north of Wausau and after 10pm. Low 61-66. Wind southwest 5-15 mph.

SATURDAY:
Partly sunny and more humid. Showers and thunderstorms developing for the afternoon. Few storms after noon far north, developing around 3pm in Wausau and the pushing southward by the evening. High 79-84. Wind west 10-15 mph.

SATURDAY NIGHT:
Few storms early. Low 60-65. Wind south 5-10.

SUNDAY:
Partly sunny, warm and humid. Chance for storms after 10pm. High 83-88. WInd south 10-20

Temperatures have been going up all week and today we could tie or break a record. Not because today will be all that much hotter than the last few days, but because the record high temperature for today is rather vulnerable. Every daily record high during the month of June is in the 90s except for two. Today is one of those days (the other being June 3rd). The record for today is only 89 ( set in 1994) and I am forecasting 88 for Wausau. As has been the case over the last couple of days, there is no doubt some spots will top 90 degrees. A few of our weather watchers were in the low 90s on Wednesday and Thursday.

So today will be hot and sunny, but a bit of a cooldown is in the works over the weekend. It might not feel too cool though, because the humidity will be going up. So it will still be a sudorific weekend. Temps will not be as warm on Saturday and Sunday because there will be more cloudcover. A cool front coming in from the north late tonight will bring a chance of thunderstorms to the northwoods. The front will then move into central Wisconsin by Saturday afternoon and again there will be a chance of thunderstorms. If you have some outdoor plans (like say the Macker basketball tournament), you might as well prepare for the chance of wet weather on Saturday afternoon. It looks like about a 50 percent chance. Any storms should diminish by Saturday evening as the front moves a little farther south in the state. On Sunday the wind will turn to the south and push the front back north as a warm front so there will be another chance of thunderstorms. However, on Sunday the chance is only about 30%. High temps should reach the low 80s on Saturday and the low to mid 80s on Sunday.

Yet another cold front will sweep through the area on Monday afternoon and evening and this one will be a bit stronger so there should be a good shot at widespread heavy rain. There might also be a higher chance of severe weather so stay tuned to for updates on Newsline 9 with Megan Syner`s forecast over the weekend.

After the front moves through the area on Monday the weather should turn a bit cooler. High temps will be in the mid 70s on Tuesday and in the mid to upper 70s on Wednesday and Thursday. There is another storm system possibly in the works for the middle of next week, but the long range computer models are in disagreement on how close it will get to Wisconsin. So for now I am only forecasting a slight chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday.

Weather History:
Dust devils are usually rather benign weather phenomena, however on this date in 1953, two boys were injured by one near Prescott AZ. One of the boys suffered a black eye, and the other boy had two vertabrae fractured by wind-blown debris
