FORECAST (updated 9 p.m. 6/30/07)

TONIGHT:
Becoming mostly clear. Low 47-52, lows into the middle 40s in northern Wisconsin. Wind east/northeast becoming east 3-10.

SUNDAY:
Becoming partly sunny with a small chance of a shower in the afternoon in the north. High 73-78. Wind east becoming southeast 5-15 mph.

SUNDAY NIGHT:
Variably cloudy with a chance of showers or a scattered thunderstorm, especially north of Wausau. Low 50-55. Winds southeast 5-10.

MONDAY:
A mixture of clouds and sunshine and a bit more humid. A chance of showers or thunderstorms. High 75-80. Wind southeast 10-20 mph.

Same old story with a different tune for this Saturday afternoon – lots of sunshine and seasonal temperatures. Lows last night were still a bit on the cool in the upper 40s to lower 50s, but this time of year, it is rather refreshing. Highs this afternoon climbed into the lower 80s. High pressure continues to dominate our weather keeping us dry and seasonal once again. As this high continues to push south and east, temperatures really aren`t going to fluctuate too much over the coming days. On the other hand, our chances for precipitation will be fluctuating through much of next week.

A stationary front across the U.P. of Michigan is expected to stay north through the overnight hours, but it will slide a bit farther south during the day on Sunday. South of the front, high pressure will keep dew points in the 40s and lower 50s across the region with light easterly winds. This will actually help limit shower and thunderstorm activity on Sunday afternoon. However, as the high slips south and east, the Northwoods may have the best chance for an isolated shower or thunderstorm late in the day and during the overnight hours Sunday. The chance is small and not much in the way of precipitation is expected. A wave of low pressure moving along the front will provide a better chance for showers and storms on Monday afternoon with the best chance across the Northwoods. Some of the storms may contain heavy rainfall. Highs both Sunday and Monday will be in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees.

The stationary front will slide back north on Tuesday and skies should start to clear out by Tuesday afternoon. The break from the rain will be temporary as another wave of low pressure helps push the front back south. Ahead of the second wave of low pressure, temperatures will be warmer with more humid conditions, which will help aid in the development of thunderstorms late Wednesday afternoon/evening, just in time for the 4th of July fireworks. Highs on the 4th of July holiday will be in the lower 80s. A cold front will push through by Thursday morning with clearing skies and temperatures falling back only into the upper 70s. Dry weather should continue into Friday, but there may be another risk of storms on Saturday.

Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend!

TODAY (4th of July):
Partly cloudy and still a bit humid. Slim shower and thundershower chance for Price, Vilas, Forest and Oneida counties. High 79-84. Wind northwest 10-15.

TONIGHT:
Enjoy the fireworks! Few clouds with areas of fog. Low 57-62. Wind west/northwest 5-10.

THURSDAY:
Partly sunny with a chance for showers and storms after noon. Some storms could contain brief gusty winds and small hail. High 79-84. Wind northwest 10-15.

THURSDAY NIGHT:
A few storms early, then clearing with areas of patchy fog. Low 54-59. WInd northwest 5-10.

FRIDAY:
Partly cloudy and beautiful. High 80-85. Wind west 10-15.

Something happenned yesterday that has been extremely rare over the last four and a half years. Heavy rain fell over almost the entire area just when we needed it most. As an extra bonus, there was hardly any severe weather, just some brief gusty winds and a lot of lightning. Rainfall amounts were generally in the 0.50 to 1.50 inch range with the Stevens Point airport checking in with one of the higher amounts at 1.65 inches. In Marshfield the rain total was 1.36 inches. The downtown airport in Wausau had 0.95 inches. Some of our weather watchers also reported some higher amounts. Bob and Louise in the town of Lanark had 1.85 inches. Merritt in Gresham reported one inch. The only spots that missed out were in the far north in Vilas, Iron, and Ashland counties, but those areas had received more rain than the rest of us over the last two weeks.

The cold front that brought the heavy rain is now south of Wisconsin and that should mean very nice weather for this 4th of July holiday. There is still enough moisture in the air that we will have a bit of fog early on and then a very slight chance of an isolated shower this afternoon, but most of the day should be partly sunny with temps warming up into the low 80s.

Another cold front will drop in from the north on Thursday. This front will not have as much moisture but it will be warm enough and there will enough wind shear to produce a 30% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and a couple of the storms could be on the strong side with gusty winds or hail. High temps on Thursday will once again reach the low 80s.

Dry weather and plenty of sunhsine will develop for Friday and Saturday. A southwest wind also means warmer temps. The mercury should top out in the low to mid 80s on Friday and in the upper 80s on Saturday. By Sunday we can also add some high humidity to the mix. High temps could reach 90 on the last day of the weekend. A cold front approaching from the north on Sunday afternoon could bring a few thunderstorms and then some relief from the heat early next week.

Another batch of rain and thunderstorms moved through the northcentral Wisconsin yesterday afternoon. Thankfully mother nature kept the "fireworks" to a minimum and there was not any severe weather. It was a bit of a surprise, as I was not forecasting any rain. The rain moved through pretty quick, so I hope everyone was able to deal with it and continue on with their outdoor Independence Day activities. I was upset that I didn`t include rain in the forecast but alternatively I was very happy to have more rainfall. 0.55 inches fell in Wausau and that brings the summer total up to 4.71 inches, which is about normal.

Another weak front will move through the area today and it could spark isolated thunderstorms. The front will move through the northwoods by late morning and then through central Wisconsin by mid afternoon. It should be southeast of our area by late afternoon. The risk of severe weather is pretty low. A couple of the storms might be capable of producing brief gusty winds and small hail. High temps should reach the low 80s making for another pleasant July day.

After today is when things will start to warm up. High temps on Friday will reach the low to mid 80s under sunny to partly cloudy skies. A southwest wind developing over the weekend should warm things up a bit more. On Saturday mostly sunny skies will prevail and the mercury will reach the upper 80s to around 90. Sunday will be hot as a firecracker (and humid too). It could be the warmest day of the year so far with highs in the low to mid 90s.

Some relief from the heat should arrive on Sunday evening as a cold front moves in from the north. The front will slowly move through the region and should bring a chance of thunderstorms both Sunday night and during the day on Monday. Of course, with such high heat and humidity, there will probably be a risk of severe weather.

With more clouds and a chance of rain, high temps on Monday should be much lower - in the upper 70s to near 80. A cooler northwest wind should take over for the middle of next week keeping high temps in the mid 70s to around 80 degree range.

On this date in 1937 Midale and Yellow Grass in Saskatchewan hit 113 degrees to establish an all-time record high for Canada
