Mostly Cloudy
TEMP: 56F
DEWPOINT: 44F
HUMIDITY: 65%

WIND: From the North at 14 Gusting to 18 MPH

TODAY:
Partly sunny, breezy and cooler. High 60-65. Wind northwest 10-20.

TONIGHT:
Partly cloudy with patchy fog. Low 33-38. Winds light north/northeast.

TUESDAY:
Increasing cloudiness. Stray late day shower in the far south (Juneau, Adams and Waushara Counties). High 57-62. WInd north 10-15.

TUESDAY NIGHT:
Mainly cloudy. Isolated showers far south... mainly southern Clark, Wood, Portage and all of Waushara, Adams and Juneau Counties. Low 33-38. Wind east northeast 5-15.

WEDNESDAY:
Mainly cloudy. Stray shower early in the far south (Juneau, Adams and Waushara Counties). High 55-60. Wind northeast 10-15.

Rainfall totals from across the area are not all in yet, but I can tell you it wasn`t anything spectacular last night. Officially there was 0.07 inches at the downtown airport before midnight. Our rain gauge here at TV-9 recorded only 0.04 inches. Judging by radar, most areas received a couple tenths of an inch or less overnight. The activity just fizzled out as the night wore on. The heavier rain fell back in parts of Minnesota and Iowa. A few showers will move through northcentral Wisconsin yet early this morning but again the rainfall amounts will not be great. Some locations might pick up an additional tenth of an inch or so.

On a side note, we recorded our first 80 degree weather of 2007 over the weekend. The high temp on Sunday was 81, which was 7 degrees away from breaking a record.

After the rain is done this morning it looks like more nice (but dry) April weather is on the way. For the rest of the weekend and during the upcoming weekend there are only slight chances of rain. Most of the time we should experience plenty of sunshine and temps more reminiscent of early May. Once the sun comes out this afternoon high temps should rise up into the mid 60s. On Tuesday and Wednesday highs will be in the low 60s. On Thursday the mercury will be back up in the mid 60s and on Friday in the mid to upper 60s. The upcoming weekend will probably be the warmest with high temps around 70.

What about those slight chance of rain. The far southern part of the area (south of Stevens Point) will have a slight chance of showers on Tuesday afternoon and evening. If any rain falls, it will likely be a few hundredths of an inch. The next slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm will come on Friday and the third slim-to-none chance will be Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Weather History:
On this date in 1988 an intense winter-like storm brought thunderstorms to southern California, and produced snow in some of the higher elevations. Nine girls at Tustin CA were injured when lightning struck the tree under which their softball team had taken shelter from the rain. (Sources: The National Weather Summary, Storm Data)

It is that time of year once again to guess when the last bit of snow or ice will melt off of Rib Mountain. More details on the contest are at the bottom of the article.

I am always amazed at the happiness that breaks out in the neighborhood when the temperatures warm up. Even when temperatures are unusually above normal for extended periods of time, people tell me how much they enjoy it. Considering the pervasive constant drumbeat in the news about how the earth is going to be destroyed by global warming and we are all going to die real soon, you would think more people would be praying for cooler temps and maybe even more snow. Now that I have planted a couple things in my garden, even I am hoping for mild temps.

The only cold weather over the next few days will be tonight. Clear skies should lead to temps dropping into the 30s for most of the area with some 20s in the far north. A few more clouds will move into southern areas so the themometer might not drop below 40 around Wisconsin Rapids or Wautoma. Daytime temps should be mostly above normal all the way through the middle of next week. With mostly sunny skies developing this afternoon, high temps should reach the low 60s (59 is the normal high).

The storm system that has been producing all of the severe weather and heavy rain across the central part of the country over the last couple of days will make a move a little farther north on Thursday and bring a chance of rain to our area. Unfortunately we will only be getting the "leftovers". The low pressure system will bring plenty of clouds but rain amounts will be light. The highest chance of showers on Thursday will be south and east of Wausau where there could be a tenth of an inch or so. For the rest of the area, it will probably just be sprinkles or a few hundredths of an inch. A couple showers might linger into early Friday morning but then it will dry up and warm up for the weekend. By Friday afternoon highs should be in the mid to upper 60s. Partly sunny skies should lead to a 70 degree day on Saturday and more sunshine on Sunday could push the mercury into the upper 70s. Temps should remain in the low to mid 70s early next with a chance of thunderstorms coming into the picture Monday night into Tuesday.

Rib Mountain Snow Contest:
1. Predict the date when the last bit of snow or ice melts off of Rib Mountain. In 2005 it was June 7th. In 2006 it was June 6th.

Send email
Regular address: WAOW-TV (Attention: Snow Contest) 1908 Grand Avenue, Wausau WI 544403.

3. Only one entry per person. Entries must be in before midnight on Friday May 4th.

4. The prize: $500.00 in gas from the R-store. If you are the only person who picks the correct date then you get all $500.00. If 10 people pick the correct date then each person will receive a $50.00 gas card from the R-store. There area over 25 R-store locations all over central and northern Wisconsin.

5. I will keep the Channel 9 sky cams focused on Rib Mountain from time to time over the next few days so you can see how much snow is left. You can see the sky cam views on our website.

Weather History:
On this date in 1920 Atlanta, GA, received 1.5 inches of snow, and experienced their latest freeze of record with a morning low of 32 degrees. The high of just 39 degrees was only their second daily high colder than 40 degrees in April. (Source: The Weather Channel)

I can stop complaining about the lack of rainfall now. For the month and for the year we are still below normal, however, the light rain yesterday really helped out. The next chance of rain will be on Monday and if it does rain it will be perfect timing (right after the weekend and right about the time we could use another soaking). So what were the rain amounts from yesterday? I was expecting a couple tenths of an inch in the southern and eastern parts of the area and it ended up being more than that. Even here in Wausau there was a very generous 0.40 inches. Now I don`t have to water my garden this weekend. Some higher amounts were reported to the south and east with the Town of Lanark checking in with 0.58 inches, Polonia had 0.42 inches, Gresham ended up with 0.44 inches, and Wild Rose was tops with 0.60 inches. Most locations in the south had amounts around 0.25 - 0.40 inches. Farther north it was a bit less. Merrill had 0.11 inches and Rhinelander only reported a trace.

Turning to the future, the rain is done for the time being. There is only a slight chance of a shower in the northwoods tonight into early Saturday morning, otherwise it should be dry for the weekend with temps warming up a bit. Today will be a little cooler than the weekend because we will start out with some cloudcover. Partly sunny skies developing in the afternoon should lead to high temps in the mid 60s. On Saturday there will be more sunshine so the mercury should reach 70. A west southwest wind and continued sunshine on Sunday means temps should reach the mid to upper 70s.

Late Sunday and cool front will move into our area from the north and it will kind-of stall in central Wisconsin by Monday morning. This front could end up being the focus of thunderstorms by Monday afternoon and evening and it might create a large difference in temps across the area. High temps might only reach the mid 60s in the northwoods on Monday while possibly climbing above 80 in the far south. The front should move south of the area by early Tuesday morning and high pressure will take over the weather. This means partly to mostly sunny conditions from Tuesday through at least Thursday. High temps will be about normal on Tuesday, in the low 60s, then rise into the mid 60s Wednesday, and into the upper 60s by Thursday. One other note, there could be a little frost in the area next Wednesday morning.

On this date in 1988 Mount Washington NH reported seven feet of snow in ten days, pushing their snowfall total for the month past the previous record of 89.3 inches set in 1975. (Source: The National Weather Summary)

MONDAY:
Chance of showers and thunderstorms. High 65-70. Winds east 5-15.

We have certainly been lucking out when it comes to the weekend weather across North Central Wisconsin. Last weekend featured temperatures a good 10 to 20 degrees above average along with a fair amount of sunshine and this go around will be rather similar. A weak front passed by the area early this morning with a few clouds and isolated showers in the far north. Sunshine will be common today with afternoon readings climbing into the lower 70s. Clear to partly cloudy for tonight with lows slipping back to the mid to upper 40s.

Warm and breezy on Sunday with a sunny to partly cloudy sky. Highs peaking in the mid to upper 70s. One aspect to note on Sunday with the brisk westerly winds, the fire danger will be moderate to high. This is of particular note for the Northwoods, where the recent rainfall bypassed the area. Please be very careful if you will be outdoors working with an open flame or anything that could create a spark.

The next wet weather maker looks to roll into our region for Monday afternoon and evening with a good risk of showers and thunderstorms. Some of these storms may be strong with gusty winds and a few heavy downpours. In the wake of this wave of low pressure, seasonably cooler conditions return for Tuesday with sunshine developing and afternoon temps in the 60s. Tranquil weather remains on the menu for Wednesday through Friday of next week with highs close to if not a few degrees above seasonal levels in the lower to mid 60s.

Have a Super Saturday!

Once again some nice rain fell in the area but it was not widespread. The same areas that missed the rainfall last week missed the rainfall yesterday - the Northwoods. Since most of the rain fell during the late afternoon and early evening yesterday, official rainfall amounts are not in yet. However, an estimated 1 to 2 inches of rain fell in areas south of Marathon county. Both Wisconsin Rapids and Stevens Point received over an inch. About 0.30 inches fell in Wausau. There was a trace in Merrill and Antigo but farther north there was virtually nothing except a few grey clouds. Because of the lack of rainfall the fire danger will remain very high in the northwoods for the upcoming week or so. The next chance of rain will not come until Monday of next week, and even then it only looks like a slight chance.

So if it isn`t going to rain for the next week the weather is going to be nice, right? Nice, except that it will be too dry. If you have some outdoor work to get done, there should be no trouble. The only potential trouble will be low temps around the freezing mark over the next couple of nights in the northern half of the area. Most people do not have any sensitive plants outdoors yet so early in the season so it shouldn`t be too much of a worry.

Other than the cool night-time temps it will be very nice. High pressure will be in control and that should mean partly or mostly sunny skies each day from this afternoon all the way through Sunday. All the active weather in the country will be over the mountain states where rain and snow will be likely everyday from today through Sunday (and maybe longer). What about high tempratures. Today will be the coolest day with highs in the low to mid 60s and then each day through Sunday should be a couple degrees warmer. The thermometer should reach the mid 60s on Wednesday, the upper 60s on Thursday, hit 70 on Friday, rise into the low 70s Saturday, and finally top out in the mid to upper 70s Sunday.

April Review:
April was a pretty wild month as far as temps go with some days not even reaching 30 degrees and a couple topping 80. The only record for the month was a record cool high temperature of 27 on the 6th. Snowfall was above normal but total precipitation was about half of normal. Here are the stats:

Average High: 53.9 (normal 54.8)
Average Low: 32.9 (normal 33.2)
Precipitation: 1.44 inches (normal 2.84)
Snowfall: 4.6 inches (normal 3.8)
Highest temp: 85 on the 29th
Lowest temp: 16 on the 6th

FORECAST (updated 5 a.m. 5/3/07)

TODAY:
Sunny to partly cloudy. High 65-70. Winds east 10-15.

TONIGHT:
Partly cloudy. Low 39-44. Wind east 5-10.

FRIDAY:
Becoming cloudy. High 62-67. Wind east southeast 10-15.

FRIDAY NIGHT:
Slight chance for showers or sprinkles. Low 45-50. Wind east southeast 5-10.

SATURDAY:
Mainly cloudy with scattered showers... mainly morning and again later in the day. High 64-69. Wind southeast 10-15.

The start of the Wisconsin inland fishing season is this weekend and I am sure a lot of people are hoping for good weather. However, if you talk to any serious fishermen/women they will tell you that cloudy weather along with some drizzle or sprinkles is the best weather in order to catch fish. For all you pros out there, the forecast has changed a little for the weekend and it now looks like a bit more cloudcover will be present along with a slight chance of rain. Earlier in the week, I did not have any rain in the forecast until Sunday night, but now there has been a little shift in the weather.

Before we get to the weekend it still looks like great weather for today with mostly sunny skies and high temps in the mid to upper 60s. Friday will also be quite nice with sunny skies in the morning and a few clouds moving in during the afternoon. High temps will once again reach the mid to upper 60s. The clouds and moisture will continue increasing on Friday night and eventually a couple of light rain showers could develop by Saturday morning. Even though more moisture will be moving into the area we will have a dry southeast wind battling against it and that should prevent any heavy rain from falling on Saturday. If there is some shower activity (about a 20/30 percent chance) it will be light and scattered.

The relatively dry southeast wind will win the battle Saturday afternoon and most of Sunday leaving us with dry weather and partly cloudy skies. The next chance of rain will arrive Sunday evening and into Monday. A cold front will move into the area but it will be weakening as it does so I am not holding out too much hope for any heavy rain. The good thing is that there is at least a chance. Another chance of rain will come late Tuesday and into Wednesday of next week. Keep your fingers crossed that it will be something substantial.

Even with a bit more cloudcover and chance for rain, temps will stay above normal over the weekend and through the middle of next week. Highs should reach the mid 60s on Saturday, the mid 70s on Sunday, and reamin in the upper 60s to low 70s from Monday through Wednesday. The normal high temperature for today is 63.

Special Note: There is a Severe Weather Spotter Training Course in Wausau tonight (Thursday night, May 3rd) at 6:30 pm. It is open to the public and free. I would encourage weather enthusiasts to attend. It is at the Marathon county extension building at 212 River Drive in Wausau. It usually takes a little over an hour. You end up learning about severe weather and viewing pictures and videos of different clouds and storms. At the end of the session you get an official Skywarn spotter card with your name on it.

Weather History:
On this date in 1990 a stubborn late season storm slowly crawled across southern Colorado the first three days of the month producing heavy snow from the San Juan Mountains to the southeast plains. The storm produced up to three feet of snow in the higher elevations of southern Colorado, and 18 to 22 inches of snow along the eastern slopes of the Central Mountains of New Mexico. Pueblo CO reported a record 10.6 inches of snow for the month as a result of the storm, and a record total for the winter season of 69.6 inches. (Source: The National Weather Summary, Storm Data)
