Stormy Saturday Evening, Nice Memorial Day

A vigorous low pressure system will cross northern Minnesota today and move into Lake Superior tonight. This will likely bring scattered thunderstorms to our area late this afternoon and evening. Some of them may contain high winds, hail, and intense lightning. An isolated tornado or two is not out of the question. This system has a lot of wind energy and shear available. That is one big consideration for determining where tornadoes might form. Winds are expected to range from southeast at the surface to strong westerly aloft up to 80 mph. That strong turning and increase in speed with height can help thunderstorms obtain rotation which in turn can help tornadoes spin up. The chance of tornadoes would be higher if temperatures and dew points could climb higher than we are currently expecting. The higher the temperature and dew point is generally the more unstable the air becomes and the greater the fuel available for explosive storm growth. But a good deal of cloud cover and dew points only in the lower 50s will likely keep the energy availabe to a minimum.

Certainly though, it`s important for you to check in throughout the day to TV 9 and 34 for updates as well as our website. If you are going to be out and about, perhaps camping or fishing or something like that it`s a good idea to check radio or weather radio for updates.

In any case showers will end tonight as the cold front blows through. Sunday will be on the cool and breezy side and we could have residual cloud cover swirling around the low pressure in Canada, thickest over northern Wisconsin. There should be some sun busting through at times however. Monday looks very nice with ample sunshine and light winds. After a cool start temperatures will moderate close to normal in the afternoon.

It looks very unsettled then from Tuesday through the end of the week as a large low pressure system slowly moves across the Plains and Midwest. We could have locally heavy rain.

WEATHER HISTORY:
On this date in 1917 - A tornado touched down near Louisiana MO about noon and remained on the ground for a distance of 293 miles, finally lifting seven hours and twenty minutes later in eastern Jennings County, IN. The twister cut a swath of destruction two and a half miles wide through Mattoon, IL. There were 101 persons killed in the tornado, including 53 at Mattoon, and 38 at Charleston IL. Damage from the storm totalled 2.5 million dollars. (David Ludlum)

I wish you an enjoyable and safe Holiday weekend.

CHILLY SUNDAY, MILD MEMORIAL DAY

Keep your jackets and sweatshirts handy today. Gusty west winds and low clouds will make it quite cool right up through midday. As low pressure over eastern Lake Superior gradually shifts east, the sun will gradually break out this afternoon and that will modify the temperatures at least to the low to mid 60s, still about 8 to 10 degrees below average. As the winds go calm tonight and temperatures tumble, patchy light frost is possible late, especially in northern areas. Otherwise a rather pleasant Monday is on tap with milder air working in.

A slow moving cold front and upper level low pressure system will very slowly move across the Midwest from Tuesday through Friday with a daily threat of rain. The air will be quite moist as air from the southern U.S. works north into the front. That could lead to some healthy downpours from time to time. I guess we can be thankful we are easing out of the drought situation that was a big concern a month ago.

It will be quite balmy ahead of the cold front Tuesday with a gradual drop in temperatures later in the week.

WEATHER HISTORY:
On this date in 1896 - A massive tornado struck Saint Louis, MO, killing 306 persons and causing thirteen million dollars damage. The tornado path was short, but cut across a densely populated area. It touched down six miles west of Eads Bridge in Saint Louis and widened to a mile as it crossed into East Saint Louis. The tornado was the most destructive of record in the U.S. up until that time. It pierced a five-eighths inch thick iron sheet with a two by four inch pine plank. A brilliant display of lightning accompanied the storm.

We had a mixture of clouds and sunshine on Sunday, but it was breezy and chilly with highs only in the middle to upper 60s. A few places south did break 70 degrees, but a few locations in the Northwoods didn`t even reach 60! The reason was because of the variability in cloud cover across the region. A low pressure system over eastern Lake Superior kept clouds over the area for a longer period of time while southern portions received more in the way of sunshine. For this Memorial Day holiday, it`ll be another nice with sunshine and milder temperatures. Winds will turn more southerly allowing for milder air to work its way into the region. Even though it will eventually warm up Monday afternoon, temperatures this morning are pretty chilly ranging anywhere from the lower 40s to the freezing mark in far north-central Wisconsin. That`s why there is a Frost Advisory in effect for the entire Northwoods, but it expires at 8 a.m. this morning. Afternoon highs will moderate into the lower 70s.

Enjoy the sunshine today because it may be awhile before we see a substantial amount of sunshine. The reason is because of a slow-moving upper-level trough and a surface low pressure system moving over the Upper Midwest. Both are moving very slowly and once it arrives, clouds, showers and thunderstorms will linger across the region. Even though the Memorial Day holiday will remain dry, clouds will gradually be on the increase today. A warm front may be close enough to central Wisconsin tonight to spark a few showers in some locations, but the majority of the precipitation will hold off until Tuesday afternoon. Lows tonight will be much milder than on Sunday night with temperatures only falling into the middle 50s.

A cold front will then meander toward the Badger State on Tuesday with showers and thunderstorms developing ahead of the front Tuesday afternoon and evening. Some of the storms may contain heavy rain, but plentiful cloud cover will limit the severe potential. The front will move through the Badger State sometime on Wednesday, but it`s not going to move too far east. Right now, the front is expected to stall somewhere between Wausau and Lake Michigan. Another wave of low pressure will ride along the stalled front and provide another opportunity for showers and thunderstorms both Wednesday and Thursday. Showers and storms will be off an on through the period so neither day should be a total washout. Temperatures behind the cold front won`t be very cool either. Highs Tuesday through Thursday will range from the lower to middle 70s, which is right around the seasonal average. There should be some clearing later Thursday and on Friday the chance for showers and storms will be south of Stevens Point. In case this forecast wasn`t wet enough for you, we could see another round of showers and thunderstorms across central WI on Saturday before we finally start to clear out and dry by the end of next weekend!

Have a safe and wonderful Memorial Day!!!

Hopefully you got to enjoy Memorial Day Monday because we are entering a more unsettled pattern for at least the next 7 to 10 days. Highs on Memorial Day reach the lower to middle 70s with lots of sunshine! Most places may still dodge showers and thunderstorms today, especially across the Northwoods, but southern areas may see a shower or thunderstorm later today. A warm front is continuing to push through the region and temperatures are warming up into the 60s in some spots. Dew points are also rising into the 50s and even 60s in SW Wisconsin. It will feel more humid today and temperatures will climb close to 80 degrees and maybe even break 80 in some spots. We`ll see some sunshine today and with the warm and humid air in place, I wouldn`t be surprised if there were a few showers and thunderstorms around. The hard part of the forecast is pinpointing where exactly they will occur so carry the umbrella with you just in case! Lows tonight will be mild as well only falling back into the middle to upper 50s. There may even be some patchy fog around late tonight into tomorrow morning, especially in areas where rain falls during the afternoon.

An upper-level trough will continue to deepen over the Central U.S. and it doesn`t look like it wants to go anywhere, at least too quickly. In that upper-level trough, a low pressure system will develop at the surface and well, it won`t be moving too quickly either. We will stay in the warm sector of the frontal system until Thursday and then a cold front will then push through late Thursday. What that means for us is that showers and thunderstorms are a possibility almost anytime through Thursday. The good news is that there should be plenty of cloud cover to limit the severe potential, so a widespread severe event is not anticipated at this time. I don`t think any day through the period will be a total washout, but if you do have any outdoor plans, do have a backup because rain may be heavy due to abundant moisture that will be available over the region. Highs through Thursday will remain fairly steady in the lower to middle 70s with very muggy conditions.

Even though the cold front is expected to push through on Thursday, it`s still not going to move out of the Upper Midwest too quickly because the front will stall just to our east. That will allow for a few disturbances to ride along the front and continue to provide opportunities for rain and thunderstorms all the way through next Monday. Temperatures behind the front however, will be slightly cooler with highs through Monday ranging from the upper 60s to lower 70s. Right now, the wettest days look to be Wednesday afternoon/evening, Friday evening/overnight and most of Saturday. We will see some peeks of sunshine late Thursday behind the front before the second wave and again on Sunday before a third wave arrives. I guess we are making up for the lack of rain that we`ve had for most of the Spring, but with the persistent rain and storms we will have to keep an eye on river and stream levels. It is possible that thunderstorms that do develop may train over the same area multiple times so that could cause locally heavy downpours that lead to flooding. That is something we will be keeping an eye on through the next week!

Chance of showers and thunderstorms early with patchy fog late. Low 59-64. Winds south southeast 5-15.

THURSDAY:

THURSDAY NIGHT:
Showers and storms with patchy fog. Low 55-60. Wind southwest 5-15.

FRIDAY:
Partly sunny with night time showers and storms. High 77-82. Wind south 10-20.

The weather pattern is going to stay stagnant over the next day or two as a very slow moving cold front continues to inch closer to the Badger State. Ahead of the front, warm and humid air will persist along with the opportunity for showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. We did see some sunshine yesterday and probably less in the way of sunshine today. That helped highs to jump into the lower to middle 80s during the afternoon hours. There were a few showers and thunderstorms around yesterday afternoon and some of those contained some heavy rains. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico is feeding into the Upper Midwest ahead of the surface cold front and is helping to enhance the thunderstorms. The good news is that heavy rain will be the main threat with these thunderstorms. Not much in the way of severe weather is expected, partially due to the abundant moisture that is weakening updrafts within the clouds. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur again this afternoon and possibly continue into the overnight hours with the approaching front. The front is expected to push through on Thursday, but that doesn`t mean precipitation will be ending. In fact, the opposite will happen.

The heaviest rain and thunderstorms will most likely be confined to the overnight hours tonight and through the early afternoon hours on Thursday. There may be an isolated severe storm along the front tomorrow, but the chance is very small. As I already mentioned, the main threat will be heavy downpours. Once the front pushes through, the area of low pressure that it was associated with will hang back over the Northern Plains and cut-off from the main part of the system. This will keep the clouds and opportunity for showers and storms over our region right through the upcoming weekend. We should see a break from the precipitation right behind the front starting late Thursday through most of Friday. We may even see some peeks of sunshine on Friday before another wave of low pressure approaches for Saturday. Rain will move in again Friday night and continue off and on through Saturday with a few embedded thunderstorms as well.

As for temperatures, it`ll be a bit cooler thanks to additional clouds with highs Thursday and Friday into the lower to middle 70s. With the second wave on Saturday, temps will only reach close to 70 degrees. Showers and possibly a thunderstorm will linger right on into Sunday and possibly into early next. So, to sum up, if you were looking for sunshine, you still might have to wait awhile, but at least we are making up for our lack of rain for much of the Spring.

FRIDAY NIGHT:

SATURDAY:
Showers and storms likely. High 72-77. Wind south 10-20.

Showers and thunderstorms rumbled across the region again on Wednesday producing mainly heavy rains in localized spots. Not everybody received rain, as much as a quarter of an inch fell in a few spots. Showers are already affecting parts of central Wisconsin this morning and there is also some patchy fog around as temperatures are fairly close to the dew point temperature. There is no doubt that the air is saturated, warm and humid conditions persisted yesterday and will continue to do so today. Highs yesterday across the area did climb into the lower 80s with what little sunshine we did have, but with more clouds over the region today, temperatures will be closer to the seasonal average which in the lower 70s. The slow-moving cold front that we`ve been watching all week will finally push into the area and weaken as it does. The low pressure associated with it is breaking off and will continue to spin over the Northern Plains. There will be occasional showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms through this afternoon, but those will taper with the frontal passage toward dinnertime.

We will finally see a break from the precipitation tonight and for most of Friday. I still can`t rule out a spotty shower or drizzle overnight just because the air will still be quite saturated toward the surface and areas of fog will also develop. It may take a little bit of time on Friday for fog to burn off, but I think that we will break into some sunshine during the afternoon hours. The break from the precipitation will be temporary, however as more rain and storms will approach the region Friday night and carry off and on throughout the weekend. Some of the rain on Saturday and perhaps Sunday may produce heavy rains once again. Our next break from the precipitation looks to be Monday evening/night, but don`t worry, more rain and storms are expected for Tuesday as well as Wednesday.

As for temperatures, it will be slightly cooler with the cold frontal passage, but should still remain around seasonal levels through the middle of next week – into the lower 70s. Beyond the middle of next week, it seems as if this unsettled pattern will continue with opportunities for additional precipitation

A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 9 am this morning for the majority of the area. Visibilities may be reduced to less than ¼ of a mile so drive slowly and allow plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. Moisture left over from yesterday`s rain showers combined with light winds and generally clear conditions is allowing for widespread dense fog. By mid-morning, the fog should burn off to some sunshine. We will see some peeks of sunshine through early this afternoon before another low pressure system pushes out of the Central Plains. This same system has brought strong to severe thunderstorms across portions of the Plains, but given the timing of the storm affecting our region, a widespread severe event is not anticipated, but we will certainly be keeping a close eye on the storm.

Warmer air will push ahead of the system today with highs climbing into the lower to middle 70s granted the fog burns off relatively quickly. Should the fog linger, temperatures may be a few degrees cooler, but given that winds are expected to pick up as the morning progresses, I don`t anticipate the latter solution. Showers and a few thunderstorms should hold off until after sunset and there may be some locally heavy rains overnight and off and on throughout the day on Saturday. I wouldn`t be surprised if there was an isolated stronger thunderstorm or two across the area given the location of the surface low and fronts, but the atmosphere will be too stable for a widespread event thanks to abundant cloud cover. Showers and storms will continue into Sunday with showers lingering into Monday. Highs both days this weekend will rise into the lower 70s despite the unsettled weather. Right now, it seems as if we`ll have a temporary break from the rain Monday afternoon before a cold front comes down out of Canada and gives us another chance for showers Monday night into Tuesday. Our next break will come Wednesday and part of Thursday. Highs will be a little cooler for the start of next week with highs running in the upper 60s to near 70, but by the middle of the week rebound back into the 70s

MONDAY:
Morning clouds giving way to some breaks of sunshine. Less humid. High 68-73. Winds northwest 10-18 mph.

After a brief break, showers and storms will work there way across the area this evening. Some of the storms could be on the strong side especially in the southern counties. Temperatures will slowly fall this evening to our projected overnight low of 56 degrees. Today highs peaked out near 80, with dew points back to uncomfortable levels.
The weekend has all the makings to be a soggy one. We still our dealing with the stubborn upper level low which has brought clouds and showers all week long. Both tomorrow and Saturday we`ll see occasional showers and thunderstorms. If you take a direct hit from one of the heavy T-Storms, you can expect some heavy rain totals. By Monday I wouldn`t be surprised if a few observers didn`t pick up an inch or so. We will continue to keep a close eye on the potential for severe weather, but the main threat with the storms seems to be just heavy rain.
The good news is, this stubborn seems to be on its way out. By next Monday and Tuesday, rain chances will only be slight. And I think by Wednesday things will clear out nicely. However, there will be a series of shortwaves to follow, so the seven day forecast is dominated by raindrops once again. We can also expect to cool off some by the middle of next week as cold fronts will trail each shortwave. Keep in touch with the forecast all weekend long while we work out of this unstable pattern.

Rain showers and a few embedded thunderstorms moved through central Wisconsin this morning and early afternoon producing anywhere from a few hundredths to near a quarter of an inch of rain. Once the first band pushed through, we saw some peeks of sunshine, which helped temperatures to climb into the lower 70s Saturday afternoon. We are not out of the woods yet when it comes to rain and storms, in fact this evening a few storms will cross into the western portions of the viewing area and some may produce heavy rainfall and gusty winds, however by then the sun will be going down helping to weaken the storms. Besides a few showers and an isolated thunderstorm through the first half of tonight, it will remain mostly cloudy with areas of fog developing toward morning. The fog may be locally dense in spots through Sunday morning, so be careful if you have any travel plans.

Sunday will prove to be an interesting weather day. An area of low pressure reached its strongest point on Saturday and a few disturbances surrounding the low helped to ignite numerous showers and thunderstorms, some containing torrential rain, dangerous lightning, large hail and gusty winds. There were just a couple funnel clouds reported as well, because of the close proximity of the center of the low to the storms. On Sunday, we will be in range for possibly the same sort of situation. The center of the low will be across south-central Wisconsin with moisture wrapping around the system. Showers and thunderstorms will be off and on during the day on Sunday and some may still contain heavy rain, gusty winds and even small hail. The one thing that will limit the amount of severe weather will be clouds because there will be good deal of clouds over our area on Sunday. In Minnesota, they saw some sunshine in the morning on Saturday which helped to destabilize the atmosphere enough for stronger thunderstorms to form. This is something we will be keeping a close eye on Sunday.

The pesky low pressure system will continue to push eastward, but very slowly so showers and an isolated thunderstorm may linger into Monday morning before the rain tapers and clouds decrease by the afternoon hours. Highs will also be on the cool side into the upper 60s to near 70. Tuesday will remain cool as well with intervals of clouds and sunshine. I also can`t rule out the possibility for an isolated shower, but it`s a very small chance. Highs will be in the middle to upper 60s. Temperatures will jump into the 70s on Wednesday and it will be breezy with showers and thunderstorms developing Wednesday afternoon. Occasional showers and storms will continue right on into Thursday with highs both days in the middle 70s. Clouds will decrease by the end of next week and we should start to enter a slightly drier pattern.

The same storm system that brought rainfall to the area over the last couple of days is still producing some light showers this morning, however it is slowly moving eastward. By this afternoon most of the shower and thunderstorms activity should move into southeastern and eastern Wisconsin. With a gusty northwind and mostly cloudy skies, high temps will only reach the mid to upper 60s, much like yesterday.

More of the same is on the way for Tuesday as another storm system moves through the state. Any showers that form should be light and widely scattered. High temps will be just a degree or two cooler, in the low to mid 60s.

It finally looks like a break of dry weather from Tuesday evening through most of Wednesday, but by Wednesday evening a cold front will move into the area and create a chance of thunderstorms. The chance of storms will continue into Thursday, at which point there could be seom severe weather. After Thursday, high pressure should move into the area and keep things mostly dry through Sunday. At this point it only looks like a slight chance of rain on Saturday.

High temps will be a little warmer later this week. The mercury should reach the low 70s on Wednesday, the upper 70s on Thursday, then fall back into the low 70s for Friday and Saturday.

Weather History:
On this date in 1825 a hurricane struck Long Island NY leveling trees and causing damage to ships. The early season hurricane, which originated around Cuba, caused major damage along the Atlantic coast from Charleston SC to New York City. Many were lost at sea.
