Partly Cloudy to Clear, Patchy Fog
Current Conditions
Partly Cloudy
Currently: 71°F

Clouds were with us a majority of the morning with sunshine just recently making an appearance. It looks as though we will enjoy partly cloudy skies for the remainder of the afternoon and early evening with areas of fog becoming possible overnight. With a little luck, Wausau will stay above 50 late with the Northwoods slipping into the mid and upper 40s.

The weekend looks more clouded to say the least with an upper level system stalling over the upper plains. Scattered showers will likely for late afternoon Saturday with the threat for additional drops lasting into Tuesday. The holiday itself will be cool with an afternoon reading Monday near 70.

Weekend Showers?

Over the last couple of months I have noted some indications of a mild winter ahead. There are three things in particular that I have highlighted.

1. Long range computer models indicate a good chance of above normal temps.

2. A weak El Nino is forming in the Pacific.

3. Recent climate trends (the last couple decades) have been warmer than normal.

Up until Monday of this week, the only talk of a cold winter I heard was the honking of a small flock of Canada Geese. This particular flock of geese was heading south in the middle of August. I thought to myself “what do they know that I don’t”. Then Monday the Farmer’s Almanac came out with their winter forecast. They are predicting bitter cold and snowy conditions for much of the United States. They claim their forecast is 80 to 85 percent correct. I haven’t followed their forecasts close enough to say definitively how accurate they are, however, I do know that the last 2 times they predicted snowy conditions for the Midwest, it didn’t happen. The Almanac predicted snowy conditions last winter but we ended up with a paltry 43.5 inches in Wausau. Normal snowfall is 58.6 inches. Are we overdue for a cold winter? I am not sure. Over the last decade, by my subjective judgment, there have only been 3 “real” Wisconsin winters. Two of them were rather snowy and one was a record breaking winter. The record-breaker was the winter of 1995-96. During that year we had almost 100 inches of snow and set several record cold temps.

Back to the present: Weatherwise, August has been a great month. We caught up on rainfall and temperatures were very comfortable. Thus I think it is fitting that we end the month on a high note. After a crisp start this morning, temps should warm into the middle and upper 70s this afternoon with plenty of sunshine. Another nice day is on the way for Friday. A few more clouds may develop in the afternoon but high temps should once again reach the mid to upper 70s. It should be a great day over at Lambeau field for the last Packer pre-season game against the Titans. Game time is 3 p.m.

Unfortunately, the "great" weather will end on Friday. The weather may end up tolerable over the weekend, it just won't be as nice as the last couple of days. There are two storms we have been talking about this week. One is a low pressure system moving in from the northern Rockies and the other is tropical storm Ernesto. These to will try to combine over the central part of the country over the weekend, however they may not come together in a way that brings heavy rain to our area. Storms can sometimes destructively interfere with each other. In any case I am still calling for a chance of rain from late Saturday all the way through Monday, but the chances are only in the 30 to 40% range at this point. The highest chance of steadier rainfall is in the southern half of the state. Even if no rain develops in our area it still looks cloudy and cooler for the weekend. High temps will be in the mid 70s Saturday and then linger around 70 on Sunday and Monday. By Tuesday the storminess should start to clear out of the Midwest leaving us with nice Fall weather for the middle of next week.

Weather History:
On this date in 1989 thunderstorms developing along a stationary front spread severe weather from Minnesota to Indiana through the course of the day and night. Thunderstorms in Minnesota produced baseball size hail near Saint Michael and Hutchinson, and drenched Moose Lake with nine inches of rain in six hours. Tucson AZ hit 100 degrees for a record 79th time in the year, surpassing a record established the previous year. (Sources: The National Weather Summary, Storm Data)

Weekend Sun Fades To Rain Eventually

Another fine early September Day is on tap thanks to a very slow moving weather pattern which is keeping high pressue situated over Wisconsin. There are 2 weather systems nearby. One low pressure in the eastern part of the country which has sprung some showers as close as Michigan.

Meanwhile low pressure dropping east-southeast from South Dakota will be our main player to bring some damp conditions Sunday evening through Monday night. Right now with the center of the low expected to pass down through Iowa into Illinois eventually, the heaviest rain should stay in southern Wisconsin where over .50" is possible. Around here we are thinking abou .25" or less.

The storm should gradually depart to the southeast Wednesday. This should set the stage for some great weather Wedensday and Thurday. Another front could affect us during the start of next weekend with some showers.

So far the holiday weekend has been a fine one across the Wisconsin River Valley with plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures. As we round out the remainder of the holiday weekend, clouds will be moving in along with the chance of showers and isolated storms. A bit of patchy fog will be found early on in the Northwoods this morning, partly to mostly cloudy conditions as the day goes on. Showers and perhaps a storm will become possible south and west of Wausau this afternoon. Highs today will peak in the lower to mid 70s. Clouds will thicken for tonight with scattered showers possible from Wausau on south. Lows will slip back into the lower to mid 50s.

Labor Day will be a gray one with scattered showers and storms possible, as an area of low pressure spins its way from Iowa into Illinois. With the clouds around, temps will struggle to make it much higher than the mid 60s to near 70. Conditions will improve just in time to head back to work and school on Tuesday with some sunshine. Readings will climb back into the mid 70s.

A Few Showers Today

To say the weekend turned out pretty nice would be the understatement of the month. It was absolutely gorgeous! Early last week, projections looked pretty bad. It looked as if it could rain all weekend. Then Ernesto move into the scene, changed the flow of weather across the U.S. slightly, and viola, the rain fell in Iowa instead here in northcentral Wisconsin. High temps were in the mid 70s with plenty of sunshine on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Today is when the showers may finally reach parts of the area, but hopefully everyone already got their fill of outdoor fun. The highest chance of showers will be generally south of highway 64 and occur during the afternoon. A few spots in the south could get a tenth or two of rain. With more clouds, high temps will only reach the lower 70s. It might actually be a bit warmer in the northwoods with some hazy sunshine and no rain. After today, it looks like more nice weather for the middle of the work week. We should experience partly sunny skies and high temps in the mid 70s on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Late this week is when we will see some big changes. A warm up is in store for Thursday. With breezy southwest winds and partly sunny skies, high temps should be in the upper 70s to around 80. A strong cold front with then enter the picture late Thursday night and move across the area on Friday. This front will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms along with much cooler weather. High temps on Friday will only reach the mid to upper 60s. A gusty north wind will make it feel even cooler. Dry weather should prevail for the upcoming weekend and it will stay a bit on the cool side. High temps for Saturday and Sunday will be in the upper 60s.

One thing to watch out for this weekend is frost. I seriously doubt there will be any frost in town or in much of central Wisconsin, but in the northwoods it will be close. I think some of the traditional low-lying cold spots in the northwoods will get a touch of frost on Sunday morning. In any case, it is a sign that Fall is here.

:D Well, it seems that the summer heat has broken here in Arkansas. Two weeks ago, we were broiling in triple-digit temperatures. For the last week now, temps have been in the lower to mid 80s, with nightly lows around 60 degrees. Woot, woot!

I so much enjoy cool weather, and boy, am I ready for it!

A Taste of Fall Arrives

A scattering of morning thunderstorms greeted the early risers this morning with temperatures steady now in the upper 50s. We continue to watch a cold front on the march from southern Canada which will likely keep the threat for additional thundershowers with us this afternoon and possibly even into the first half of tomorrow.

The front will work with available moisture and in southern Wisconsin some warmth as the northwoods need a jacket with highs only foreseen in the 60s. Here in Wausau I remain optimistic with 70, but I wouldn't be certain of achieving that mark unless you are say in Wisconsin Rapids or Lanark.

Otherwise everyone should settle into the 40s overnight with a true taste of Fall awaiting tomorrow. That is when i expect central Wisconsin to remain in the lower to middle 60s for highs with the possibility of even a 50 or two in the north. Another chance of showers is possible Monday afternoon with a surface system passing by, by midweek however we do expect to find some sun with highs steadily climbing back into the low to mid 70s. Look for the warmest day to be next Thursday with partly sunny skies continued.

Watch out for spotty frost in the Northwoods Sunday and even early Monday with temperatures there dipping in the middle 30s.

Have a great day!
