TODAY:
Occasional light snow ... another half inch or so of accumulation. High 13-18. Wind south becoming west this afternoon 10-15.

TONIGHT:
Cloudy with scattered flurries, mainly early. Chilly. Low 0 to 4. Wind northwest 5-10.

As expected we are entering what should be the coldest week (or two?) of the entire winter season. High temps might not reach 20 until sometime after February 6th. Low temps will likely be near zero this week and go below zero for the weekend. Be sure to have your warm winter gear handy! The only thing missing is "big snow". There will be several bouts of light snow through the week, but it won`t add up to very much. We could end up with an inch or so today, again on Wednesday, a for a third time from Thursday night into Friday. The most I can imagine for any one locations this week would be about 5 or 6 inches and that is only if the maximum amount of snow would fall each time a storm system moved through. Most locations will add another 2 to 3 inches.

So temps will be below normal but not get bitter cold until Friday. High temps from today through Thursday will be in the mid to upper teens. On Friday the day will start out ok with temps around 10 degrees but by afternoon temps could be down to zero as a strong cold front moves through the area. The wind will also become a bit gusty Friday afternoon into Saturday morning, creating wind chills well below zero.

So how bad will it be over the weekend? I don`t think we will break any records, but high temps will only be a couple degrees above zero and low temps will be around 10 below zero. A few spots could have low temps close to 20 below zero by Sunday or Monday morning.

So now that you know it is going to be cold for a while, you are probably wondering when it will warm up again. You are probably asking yourself "where is El Nino when I need him?" It looks like the "real" cold pattern will break around the middle of next week (February 7th or so). At that point temps should once again rise up into the 20s. If you are wondering about and extended period of 30s and 40s, you will have to wait even longer. It might take until the 3rd or 4th week of February to acheive temps that warm.

It took awhile for old man winter to arrive but now here is here to stay for awhile. I will probably spend more on heating my house over the next week than I did during the entire month of December. That being said, the "real" cold arctic air will not arrive until Friday.

Even though the bitter cold is a couple days away, today will be plenty chilly with a northwest wind around 10 to 18 mph and high temps in the mid teens. The normal high temp for this time of year is 24. Temps will stay about 5 to 10 degrees below normal for Wednesday and Thursday (highs in the mid to upper teens) and we will have a continued chance for a dusting of snow. The highest chance will be on Wednesday evening. The next chance of more significant snow will be on Friday. The storm system coming through the area that will usher in the frigid cold could also produce an inch or two of snow.

How frigid will it be over the weekend? On Friday we will start out with temps near 10 but by the end of the day it will be around 0 with a gusty north wind creating wind chills around 20 below zero. By the time you wake up Saturday morning the temps will probably be around 10 below. High temps on Saturday and Sunday will only be a degree or 2 above zero. Prior to this weekend, the coldest day we had the entire winter was way back on December 7th when the high temp was only 12. The coldest temps in the upcoming arctic blast will probably be on Monday morning with low temps around 15 to 20 below zero.

TODAY:
Sunny breaks with clouds increasing for the day. Flurries developing after 4pm. High 15-20. WInd southwest 10-18.

TONIGHT:
Light snow. Accumulations around an inch. Low 1-6. Wind southwest 5-15.

It seems winter was holding back and saving up all the cold for the upcoming weekend. Through most of December and January temperatures were well above normal. Earlier this month we had a few days that were 20 degrees above normal! Now we will have just the opposite. Temps will be at least 20 degrees below normal for the upcoming weekend. High temps might not reach zero on Saturday and Sunday. If the mercury does stay below zero on either of those days, it will be the first such occurrence since January of 2005. Of course, if high temps are below zero that means overnight low temps will be ridiculously cold. Low temps each night from Friday night through Monday night we will have low temps in the -10 to -20 range.

Back to the present: the only thing to worry about today and tonight is a weak trough of low pressure moving through the area. This will bring a chance of light snow late this afternoon and tonight. Much like the previous few storm systems the snow will be light and fluffy with less than an inch accumulation. It will be just enough that you will have to brush off your car windshield before going to work Thursday morning. Any leftover flurries should end Thursday morning leaving us with one last tranquil day before the arctic blast hits the area on Friday. High temps today and Thursday should be in the mid to upper teens.

So over the weekend we will have the coldest weather of the winter season. The next quesiton is, how long will it last? Temps will likely stay below normal all of next week before rebounding a bit as we get closer to Valentines day. The current long range computer models show much milder weather during the middle of the month. Just remember that the forecast is fairly inaccurate once it gets past 8 or 9 days. It could end up cold through the entire month of February. You can never be 100% sure in the long range. One thing we have going for us is El Nino. It has weakened, but it is still out there in the Pacific it and could mean a bit milder weather late this month and through much of March. Another thing that would be conducive to an warm-up is the lack of deep snow. Right now there is only a few inches of light fluffy snow on the ground across most of central Wisconsin. It will only take a couple days of high temps around 40 to put a serious dent in the snowcover. Once the snow is gone, spring-like warmth can develop much easier.

Time for a January recap! Even though temps were about normal or even colder than normal for the last couple weeks of the month, January 2007 ended up warmer than normal. There were a few days early in the month that were 20 degrees above normal and that more than balanced out the colder weather toward the end. Low temps were about 8 degrees above normal and high temps were about 4 degrees above normal. We had near record warmth in December and now January is in the books as above normal so it is most likely the winter as a whole will follow that trend. Even with some bitter cold early in February, I don`t think there will be enough cold weather to completely balance out the much warmer than normal temps of December and January. Here are the stats for January:

Average High: 26.5 (normal: 22.4)
Average Low: 12.3 (normal: 3.6)
Precipitation: 0.47" (normal: 1.09")
Snowfall: 8.2" (normal: 13.7")
Highest Temp: 42
Lowest Temp: -6

More tranquil weather is on the way for this Thursday. You could call it the calm before the storm, that is, if there was a big storm headed our way. A more fitting phrase might be "the calm before the cold". There will be a little snow tonight and on Friday but I would hardly call it a "storm". Snowfall totals in central Wisconsin will likely range from a dusting up to an inch from tonight through Friday afternoon. In far northern Wisconsin there will be a bit more because of Lake Superior contributing more moisture to the air. In parts of Vilas, Iron, and Ashland counties there could be 2 to 4 inches. In the UP of Michigan it could end up being over 6 inches.

How cold will it get? It will be cold enough to make today`s high temperatures in the upper teens seem downright spring-like. On Friday, the high temperature of around 10 will occur around midday with temps falling into the single digits in the afternoon. On Saturday and Sunday it will be difficult to find any temp readings above zero. For most locations temps will stay in the single digits below zero. Early next week there should be a slight moderating trend, but it still looks quite cold. High temps on Monday will be around 0. On Tuesday we should make it a couple degrees above zero and on Wednesday high temps could climb all the way up to 10. So it will get a little milder next week, but I don`t see any dramatic warm-up (into the 20s or 30s) until Valentines Day or a little later.

Of course, with the high temps so frigid, you know that the low temps will be even worse. From Saturday night all the way through Tuesday night low temps will be in the -10 to -20 range. If the winds become calm on any one of those nights the mercury could drop even further...maybe down to -25.

Cold air is usually also very dry so don`t expect a lot of snow for the next week. In the lake effect areas in the far north, there could be an inch or two each day but for central Wisconsin it looks like only a dusting is possible on Saturday and again on Monday.

Don`t make the mistake I did this morning and forget to bundle up properly. Be sure to put on a couple layers of clothing. Get out the scarf, mittens, boots, and other warm accessories. The temperature will remain in the single digits above zero today and the wind chill will be around -10 to -15...and this is just the beginning. It will turn even colder for the weekend. High temps on Saturday and Sunday will be in the single digits below zero and low temps will be around -10 to -20. What about the weekend wind chill. I suspect that wind chill advisories will be issued at some point. The wind chill on Saturday and Sunday will be between -20 and -30.
The only thing missing from the whole scenario is snowfall. We will have a few flurries late this afternoon through Saturday afternoon but no accumulation. The only spots that could end up with a few inches are far northern Wisconsin and in the UP of Michigan with lake effect snow. The lake effect will continue all the way through the middle of next week, so it will be a real winter scene in the UP. Here in our area, it still looks like mainly dry weather all the way through late next week. The cold arctic air doesn`t have much moisture, as your chapped lips and dry skin can attest.

One thing that will change late next week is the temperature. We will experience a gradual warm-up. On Tuesday, high temps should climb back above zero by a couple of degrees. On Wednesday I am forecasting a high of 10 and on Thursday the mercury should hit the mid teens. Even further down the line it looks like cool temps through at least Valenties Day. Temps will be a little below normal, in the teens and 20s, but not bitter cold.

TODAY:
Suntastically cold and breezy. High 1-6. Wind west 10-15, with some higher gusts. Wind chills -30 to -15.

TONIGHT:
Variably cloudy with scattered flurries or lake effect snow showers far north. Low -6 to -11. Wind west northwest 5-15. Wind chills -25 to -15.

The deep freeze has arrived and it is expected to be keeping the Badger State finely chilled right into the middle of next week. As you look out the window today, it may be deceiving since there is going to be plenty of sunshine around, however the second you step outside, the cold air will hit you. It`ll be a blustery day as well, with wind chill values running in the -20 to -35 range. Highs only making it close to zero. Bitterly cold tonight with a mostly clear sky. Lows tumbling to the mid to upper teens below zero. Factor in winds running 5 to 15 mph and wind chill values could be as low as -40 in some places. Dry for Super Bowl Sunday but still very cold with highs struggling to hit the middle single digits below zero. Arctic high pressure holds on for Monday and Tuesday with frigid nights and colder that average days. Afternoon reads are expected to make it into the single digits above zero.

A wave of low pressure may clip by to our south on Wednesday, providing a chance of a few flurries. Late next week readings should be back into the teens by day with more sunshine in the works.

Please remember to bundle up before heading outside today. With wind chill values running anywhere from -20 to -40, frostbite can occur in as little as 10 mins. The best rule to follow is to dress in layers with the outer layer being a warm winter coat, a knit hat, gloves, scarf, and a good pair of warm boots. Also be sure to limit the amount of time your pets spend outside, as they can develop frostbite as well.

TODAY:
Very cold and breezy. Partly sunny with scattered flurries. Scattered snow showers possible in the Lake Superior snow belt. High -5 to 0. Winds west/northwest 8-18.

TONIGHT:
Very cold. Mainly clear. A few snow showers or flurries possible in the Lake Superior snow belt. Low -20 to -15. Winds west/northwest 8-15.

**WIND CHILL ADVISORY**
Wind Chill Advisories remain in effect for the entire NewsChannel 7 area and most of Wisconsin. Wind chill values are expected to reach 30-45 degrees below zero at times. ---until noon Sunday for Taylor, Clark, Juneau, and Adams Counties.
