TODAY:
Cloudy with occasional light snow. Another 1" to 2" expected. High 28-32. Wind northeast 10-15.

TONIGHT:
Light snow and flurries early. Low 13-18. Wind north northeast 5-10.

Early last week I mentioned that the worst cold of the winter season was behind us but the worst snowfall may still be ahead. I wasn`t going out on much of a limb because most of the winter had been very uneventful with little snowfall, until this past weekend. We made up lost ground in a hurry. I Wasuau, it was the biggest snowfall of the winter season. The storm produced 0.90 inches of snow late Friday night/Saturday morning, 7.2 inches on Sunday, and a bit more will fall today. The total snow here in town should end up around 9 inches. The previous heavy snow here in town was 7.0 inches just a couple days before Christmas. The 7.2 inches of snow on Sunday also broke a record for the date (25th). The old record was 4.5 inches, set back in 1962. Green Bay also had a record snowfall on Sunday of 9.8 inches. The heaviest snowfall of the weekend was just northwest of La Crosse near Winona Minnesota. 30 inches of snow was reported in spots around Winona county! 15 to 20 inches of snow fell in southern Wisconsin around La Crosse, Wisconsin Dells, and Madison. Lighter amount were reported in the northwoods. About 3 to 5 inches fell in parts of Vials and Oneida counties.

Don`t look now, but another storm is on the horizon. The light snow on this Monday will taper to flurries on Tuesday. High temps on both days will be around 30. On Wednesday the clouds will hang around and the next storm will start to bring precipitation to the area by evening. It looks very similar to the last storm with high winds developing late Wednesday night and some heavy snow or a wintry mix possible on Thursday and Friday. How heavy? It could be as much or greater than the last storm. I`ll had a better idea on the amounts tomorrow, so check in again. In any case, it could be big trouble on the roads once again. Adjust your travel plans for Thursday and Friday accordingly. If the snow and wind develop as expected on Thursday, then I think we can definitely say March is coming in like a lion. The storm will move out of the area on Saturday and by Sunday we might see the sun once again.

Even though there could be another big snowfall, it doesn`t look like there will be too much cold air. High temps will remain around 30 on Wednesday and Thursday before falling into the upper 20s on Friday and Saturday.

TODAY:
Cloudy with occasional flurries and light snow showers. High 27-32. Wind variable 5-10.

TONIGHT:
Variably cloudy with scattered flurries and patchy freezing drizzle. Low 15-20. Wind east 5-10.

Before the next big storm arrives it looks like some tranquil weather in store for the area. Today will be cloudy with a few flurries and not much wind. High temps should climb up to around 30. Most of Wednesday will be the same with a bit more wind, but minus the flurries. The mercury should reach the low 30s by afternoon.

The messy weather should hold off until the evening hours on Wednesday. The storm system moving through the area will be very similar to the last storm with on exception - it will track a little farther north. This means that there will be a bit warmer air drawn up into the state and some of the snow might mix with sleet or freezing rain in the southern half of the area (south of Marathon county) on Wednesday night and again on Thursday. If an icy mix does develop then snow amounts will be lighter in the south and the heavier snow will be from Wausau on north. How much? Right now it looks like 2 to 4 inches is likely on Wednesday night and 4 to 8 inches is possible on Thursday. Some locations could even top 10 inches on Thursday so storm totals might be over a foot. Again, in the south, it might be a bit less with only 1 to 3 inches on Wednesday night and another 2 to 4 on Thursday. Along with the snow there will be quite a bit of wind, drifting, and low visibility. Adjust your travel plans accordingly.

There storm system will still be in the area on Friday but it will winding down. It will be breezy and there will be light snow, but I am only expecting an inch or so of accumulation. Some flurries will linger into Saturday and then Sunday and Monday look dry with slightly below normal temps.

After the snow it will be a little cooler but not drastically cold. High temps will reach the upper 20s on Friday, then fall into the mid 20s for Saturday. On Sunday the mercury should be back up into the upper 20s and on Monday in the low 30s.

At one point this month we were on pace to set the record for the driest February ever in Wausau and also the coldest. Obviously the chance for the dry record is gone, but what about the one for cold weather. The coldest February on record occurred in 1967 when the average high temp was only 9.0. This year the average temp for February is currently 9.7. So it is very close, but with high temps around 30 for today and Wednesday, there is no chance we will break the record. February will still end up about 9 degrees below normal and about 9 degrees colder than January.

UPDATE: Here It Comes Again
UNDATED (AP) -- Another round of rough weather is headed for Wisconsin, prompting several snow emergencies.

The National Weather Service has posted a blizzard warning for Douglas County for tonight through Friday.

Forecasters say two full days of heavy snow could add up to another two feet.
The first shot tomorrow should bring three to six inches in northwestern Wisconsin.

Elsewhere, a winter storm warning is in effect for north and central areas of the state with a winter weather advisory in portions of southern Wisconsin.

***WINTER STORM WARNING***
...in effect from 6 p.m. today until 6 a.m. Friday for Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Lincoln, Langlade, Marathon, Wood, Portage, Waupaca, Waushara, and Menominee Counties.
...in effect from 6 p.m. today until 6 p.m. Friday for Taylor, Clark, Juneau, Adams, Price, and Iron Counties.

Well, we thought last weekend might have been the biggest snowstorm of the year for central and northern Wisconsin, but Mother Nature had another trick up her sleeve and this time the northern half of the state will get hit the hardest. The exact details of this storm are still uncertain, but we are doing the best we can to figure them out. So, what do we know so far?

The northern half of the Badger State looks like it`ll receive the most snow with the heaviest snow falling tomorrow afternoon/evening. Like last weekends storm, there will be a trough of lower pressure ahead of the main system bringing anywhere from 2 – 4 inches tonight. Then, the main storm system will move north-northeast out of the central Plains bringing plenty of Gulf of Mexico moisture with it. The difference with this storm is that it won`t become fully developed until it`s in the Upper Midwest. Last weekend, the storm was starting to weaken as it moved north. This means that snow totals with this storm will be slightly higher as well as the possibility for moderate to heavy mixed precipitation in close proximity to the lows center. Also, since this storm will be at its strongest just south of Wisconsin, there will be more instability and a better chance for convective precipitation which includes thundersnow. Near and just north of the low temperatures will be close to freezing allowing for the possibility of small, but consistent area of freezing rain/sleet including locations along Highway 29 from Green Bay to south of Minneapolis.

So, how much snow will fall? Well, right now it looks like the heaviest snow accumulations will be in the northwest Wisconsin this time around. There may be as much as 12-18 inches of snow for those locations north and west of Wausau including Phillips and Medford starting tonight through Friday afternoon. The Wausau area and just south may pick up 6 – 10 inches. South of Wood and Portage counties, snow totals will be closer to 3 – 6 inches due to the higher chance for a rain/sleet/freezing rain mix. As Wisconsin becomes more on the northern side of the storm Thursday night, chillier air will be wrapped into it and precipitation will be mainly snow.

Just like last weekend, it`ll be very windy with this storm with sustained east winds around 20 to 30 mph and gusts close to 40. That means any snow that falls will be blowing and drifting and visibilities will be greatly reduced. There will be near blizzard conditions north and west of Wausau where the heaviest snow amounts are expected.

Snow will taper a bit on Friday, but a couple of inches are still possible as the storm system winds down just to our west. Things will calm down quite a bit for the weekend with more sunshine into early next week. Highs on Saturday and Sunday will be in the middle to upper 20s, but temperatures next week will climb into the middle 30s and possibly 40 degrees by the middle part of the week.

Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for most of the area with a Winter Storm Warning in effect for Price, Iron, Ashland, Clark, Taylor, and Jackson counties. The snow will taper off to flurries tonight and we might again wake up with a few flurries on Saturday. By Saturday afternoon the storm should finally be out of the area and hopefully the clouds will break-up a bit. If the clouds don`t break up on Saturday afternoon, don`t worry, there should be plenty of sun on Sunday. High temps will be a little cooler over the weekend but not too bad for this time of year. The mercury will top out around 30 today, drop into the mid 20s for highs on Saturday, then rebound back up to 30 on Sunday.

Next week should be a little warmer and fairly quiet. A couple of storm systems will skirt the U.S./Canadian border and could bring a bit of cloudcover at times, but precipitation chances are slim. High temps will be in the low 30s Monday and Tuesday and then might jump up close to 40 on Wednesday.

Sunny to partly cloudy, breezy and cool. Highs were just after midnight in the middle 20's. Temps should rebound to 15-20 for the afternoon. Wind northwest 10-20.

TONIGHT:
Partly cloudy and chilly. Low -6 to -1. Wind becoming light and variable.

March has come in like a lion in North Central Wisconsin thanks to that powerful storm that dumped up to 3 feet of snow in far northern Wisconsin and portions of the U.P. from last Thursday into this past weekend. There was even one school, Michigan Tech located up around Houghton that canceled classes for the first time in about 6 years. Needless to say, we are getting a break from the active weather currently with high pressure stretched out across the region. Although the early March sun is getting stronger, temperatures during the day on Monday only managed to make it into the mid teens to the lower 20s. Tonight is setting up to be probably one of the coldest nights so far for the month with a clear sky, fairly light winds, and a fresh snow pack. Readings will drop like a rock down below zero just about everywhere, while some places in the north could settle down around the -10 mark.

An Alberta Clipper will be streaking southeastward on Tuesday, so the day should start off with sunshine, before clouds thicken during the early afternoon. Light snow could break out by late in the day in the Northwoods, while the central and south should see it arrive during the early evening hours. This snow will be of a powdery consistency with readings running in the teens Tuesday night. Right now I`m thinking accumulations by Wednesday morning will range from 1 to 3 inches in the Wisconsin River Valley.

Sunshine breaks out by the mid morning hours on Wednesday and it conditions remain dry for Thursday as well. Another system is then anticipated to move in Friday. However this go around, with a southerly flow, temperatures may be warm enough for either rain or snow showers in the area. Flurries linger on Saturday in the wake of the cold front with afternoon readings running close to freezing.

Milder air is in the works by early next week with highs in the 40s a possibility

TODAY:
Occasional snow. An inch or two by the evening. High 15-20. Wind south 5-15.

TONIGHT:
Light snow with another inch or so possible. Snow should taper off after midnight. Low 5-10. WInd north 5-10.

More winter-like weather is on the way for this Tuesday. High temps have been below normal every day so far this month and today will be no exception, in fact, today could be the coldest day of the month with low temps below zero early in the morning and high temps struggling to reach the upper teens this afternoon. Along with the cold temps will come a chance of light snow during the afternoon and evening. The storm system moving through will travel at a quick pace so I am not expecting a lot of accumulation. One to three inches is possible in the northern half of the area (mostly before midnight), while a dusting up to an inch is likely for areas south of Wausau. After the storm departs the winds will turn to the northwest and keep temps on the cool side once again for Wednesday. Highs will reach the mid 20s. After Wednesday a warmer weather pattern will take over and it might be a few days before we shiver again, maybe all the way through next week.

On Thursday the wind will turn to the southwest and the mercury should climb up to around 30. A continued southwest to west wind will bring milder Pacific air across most of the country on Friday. Here in northcentral Wiconsin high temps should reach the mid 30s with a chance of light rain or snow showers as a weak cool front moves through the area. Even after the front moves through, high temps will remain in the mid to upper 30s for the weekend. At this point I can`t be too sure about how much sunshine there will be over the weekend because melting snow may cause some low clouds to form. In any case, it will feel pretty nice.

In addition, it doesn`t look like the warm-up will stop at the weekend. The mercury will challenge 40 on Monday and should rise above 40 during the middle of next week. High temps could even rise above 50 at some point, depending on the amount of sunshine.
