Senator Joe Biden

Its different if you grow up around them, are taught safety.. Its just unfortunate that so many people get them and dont take the proper precautions. It makes me sick to my stomach to hear about little kids being shot because mom and dad didn't lock the gun up. The hard part is trying to balance the rights of the responsible gun owners against the safety of innocents.

You know this is another one of those things we weren't taught anything about. I mean dad never said here's my guns don't play with them. We knew what a gun was because we played cowboys and indians and we knew guns can hurt you. We just never gave it a second thought. I think now days there is too much attention brought to them. I can see the same differences in the way you and I feel on this issue too but that's ok. Of course it upsets me when anyone gets shot especially kids it's awful. Times sure has changed because I never heard of accidental shootings when I was growing up.

Forgot to say we knew guns were for hunting and hunting meant food on the table.

There are a couple of reasons for this I think.

First~ Information is more available now than it was 30,40, or 50 years ago.. back then a shooting could take place in hick town usa and no one but people locally would ever hear about. now days if a shooting takes place in hick town usa its all over the wire inside of 30 minutes.

second~ Back then if a child was accidentally shot using a parents gun it was treated as a tragic accident and people were sypmpathetic. They were not treated like negligent parents.

thought of a couple more reasons.

more people now, higher rate of crime means more people are arming themselves..

more families with both parents working so kids are left alone alot more than they used to be.

Well something has changed from back then and I have an opinion what but I have to go sweep  Lets just say on this theory we disagree on again. I'm sure it has to do with our political beliefs. :)

I agree. It's definately about how one is or isn't taught when it comes to gun safety. A child who lives in a house with a parent who has a gun better know about gun safety in some respect. Leaving a child to do what they wish with a gun laying around irresponsibly or expecting them to know better makes for an irresponsible parent. Not to mention a possibly dead kid.

Thinking about your daughter, Trace, there's no way she could have known a real gun could be deadly? Can you imagine just expecting her to know better? No way no how. Any parent who has a gun in the house has an obligation to teach their child or children about guns.

Guns do not necessarily represent food in today's society. It does in a way if your dad or grandpa or whoever is a hunter. But guns are so glorified in today's world. Guns represent coolness and power and how "hardcore" one is in some people's eyes. Kids see movies with guns, play video games that contain guns, listen to songs that talk about poppin' caps in someone's butt. Unless they are also taught that guns also represent safety and food for the family, that part gets lost.

I was thinking about guns last night after getting off of here. There's no way I'd be able to have a gun in this house with both of us working unless we had some sort of super duper gun safe that was impenetrable. Well, I mean I'm sure that they exist but I'm not exactly up on or in the know on gun safes. The boys are already sneaking and getting into stuff as it is. We have to keep Christmas and birthday presents(not to mention certain movies and the like) locked up like Ft. Knox in the trunks of the cars! Unless I had one of those super duper gun safes I'd probably come home to see them picking the lock or wearing a stethoscope, trying to figure out the combination.

We do have a gun in the house. My kids know there is a gun in the house, but they do not know where it is ~ period! The only reason that we have it is because Jimmie is on 3rd's and I have something here 'just in case'. Of course, it is hidden, and has a safety lock, and no bullets in it...so by the time I get to it ~ it will probably be to late! Man, I feel safer already!

Caitlyn actually had a friends brother that was killed a couple of years ago. His dad was 'cleaning' his gun while drunk and it went off killing the brother in the next room. Caitlyn's friend was in the room with his brother when it blew most of his brother's head off.

This was a grown man cleaning a gun while intoxicated...he killed one, but ruined the lives of everyone else in that family that day. He seems to be the only one not affected. If that seems harsh, you have to know this man!

The other brother, Jordan (Caitlyn's friend), finally went back to school, but is having so much trouble it is just unreal...just a sad story all the way around!

That's awful and of course drinking didn't make sense while handling a gun.

That is horrible, Tammy. I feel so bad for everyone involved. It actually made me cringe to read that. May that poor boy rest in peace and may his father's soul find some peace as well. I can't imagine! I just don't want to...

And yeah, by the time I had to get out the gun I'd have been brutalized or killed. Hubby just filled in another old aluminum bat with concrete so now we both have one on our side of the bed. I tell you what...God help the soul of the man who breaks in to our house! These bats are so rock-solid and heavy that I bet you it will take a head clean off its shoulders!

He wasn't his father! And he didn't like the boys. There is no way that he could have done it on purpose though as the bullet went through a wall and struck Travis in the head in the other room, but it was something that he didn't seem to terribly upset by. He made several statements to the press around here that really seemed outragous ~ and didn't seem like a shock type statement. People were so upset by the way he talked about Travis after his death ~ it was really sad!

OH!! OK, I see. I thought you meant he didn't seem affected by it but he was the type of man that kept it bottled up.

Well, I'm taking back my wish of him having a peaceful soul. Seems pretty telling of his character to talk about the boy like that, especially since he was the dumb, donkey's backside who shot him.

Well, there was no way for you to know that ~lol! I didn't put that in my post...he is something else though. All he could talk about was how much trouble that Travis had caused and 'poor me' ~ made me want to throw up! That poor Mom! I feel so sorry for what she went through after losing her son ~ it was just compounded by that jerks actions!!

Do I dare ask if the mother is still with the man? I'm betting on no. To me, that's the ultimate in adding insult to injury. And for the man to not acknowledge any responsibility is beyond belief! Sounds like a child who got caught doing something naughty and is trying to justify his behavior.

Nope ~ he is long gone. She is left with the bills that this man racked up while he was there. They are still in the same place if I am not mistaken. I can't imagine staying where my child was killed, but I don't think they could afford to move...losing a child anyway is horrible, but to lose one in such a horrific way is just unimaginable!
