Hi Jordan – before we begin, please could you talk us through your experiences of working in the online casino industry, and give us your thoughts on the current status of sweepstakes platforms in the US?
Of course. I came into the iGaming world with a background in journalism, and I now have five years of experience under my belt producing reviews and guidance content for leading online casinos, sportsbooks, and guidance platforms. It’s been a steep learning curve at times, but I really enjoy my work as a Content Editor over at Casino.us, where I’m now largely focused on reviewing all the latest sweepstakes casinos. A key part of my role also involves keeping up with iGaming laws in the US, which are constantly changing at the moment, so that certainly keeps me on my toes!
In terms of the current status of sweepstakes platforms in the US, I think we’re reaching a point where these sites are going to be a hot topic of discussion over the next couple of years. With so many people now choosing to play on these sites regularly, the sector has reached a significant size, and regulators are now paying them a lot more attention. We’ve seen an increase in regulatory action in the US, as sweepstakes sites now face growing scrutiny. Can you explain some of these recent developments, and how these might affect players and operators?
The regulatory landscape in the US for sweepstakes platforms is definitely changing, and I think that will only continue to evolve over the next few years. We’re seeing different developments in different states, with some moving to restrict these platforms altogether, whilst others are moving to bring them under existing traditional gambling legislation. The US has always been home to a very patchy regulatory landscape, and the same seems to apply to social gaming models as well – each state will carve out its own path here.
In terms of how these changes might affect players and operators in the US, I think the main challenge over the next few years will be keeping on top of the developments. It’s understandably difficult to be well-informed within such a rapidly changing market – even for my fellow experts at Casino.us and me, it takes a lot of effort and research to stay ahead of everything! It will become increasingly important to do so, though, in case the availability or legal status of a site changes, so for both players and operators, I think following US iGaming news closely will be an important task.
Compliance is clearly becoming a bigger priority for many operators in the country today – could the rising influence of regulation bring any benefits to the sweepstakes sector in the US?
I can definitely see some potential benefits – it's obviously quite a gray area for players and operators alike right now, and I think having greater regulatory clarity and expectations could bring about a more level playing field for everyone involved. There are certainly some conversations to be had, but I think clearer standards and expectations across the sweepstakes sector could be beneficial, particularly for players and newcomers to this format. For example, it would likely become easier to identify legitimate, reputable sites if regulators were more involved in certain areas.
Lastly, from your perspective as a sweepstakes expert, do you have any predictions for the future of social gaming models, or how the US iGaming market might change further in the years to come?
Personally, I think we’ll begin to see a much clearer distinction between social gaming and regulated gambling platforms. The sweepstakes model won’t just disappear, but I think operators will soon need to adapt to a landscape in which regulatory bodies play an increasingly significant role. There will still be a state-by-state approach, of course, which will lead to some uncertainty, but I think once clearer rules are established, operators and players will have greater clarity and a better understanding of their opportunities moving forward.
Looking at the wider US iGaming market, I think regulation will remain a fascinating topic over the next few years. At this point, some states are home to really quite mature, well-regulated online casino markets, and I expect we’ll see wider discussions about licensing and responsible gaming in other regions in the near future. For players, I'm hopeful that the future of online casinos in the US will consist of a more straightforward approach.
