POLLEN COUNT
The Grass Pollen Count for this weekend will be in the moderate range. (Courtesy: Marshfield Clinic--Wausau Center)

FORECAST (updated 8:00 a.m. 6/17/07)

TODAY:
More in the way of clouds than sun, very warm and humid with scattered showers and thunderstorms. High 82-87. Wind south 10-15 mph.

TONIGHT:
Scattered showers and storms winding down during the evening, otherwise some clouds and still muggy. Low 60-65. Wind south 6-12 mph.

MONDAY:
Partly to mostly cloudy and breezy with afternoon rain and thunderstorms likely. Some storms my be strong to severe with heavy rain, gusty winds, and hail. High 81-86. Wind southwest 12-24 mph.

MONDAY NIGHT:
Showers and storms ending by midnight, then becoming partly cloudy. Low 52-56. Wind west around 10 mph.

TUESDAY:
Partly to mostly sunny and less humid. High 74-78. Wind west 10-18 mph.

Once again it is getting a little too dry for most of the area. It has been a nice stretch of weather for the farmers to make hay, and for the kids to head out to the pool, but that is about it. The only locations that received significant rain over the weekend were in the northeastern pasrt of the area. Severe thunderstorms rumbled through parts of Price, Lincoln, Oneida, Langlade, and Forest counties yesterday producing large hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter and heavy rain.

So today`s rain chances could not come any sooner for most of us. The good news is that there is a lot of moisture in the air (including some tropical moisture) and this could mean some heavy downpours. Much of the area should end up with 0.50 to 1.0 inches of rain with a couple spots over an inch. The rain and thunderstorms will form along a strong cold front later this afternoon and linger through the evening hours before ending around midnight. Even though it is a strong cold front and there is a lot of moisture in the air, the wind shear is not all that great today so the threat of severe storms with tornadoes is not as great as 2 weeks ago, or even yesterday. The main threat from the storms later today will be from large hail and brief strong winds.

After the front moves through it finally looks like temps will cool down to normal, at least for one day. High temps on Tuesday will be in the mid 70s with gusty WNW winds and a partly sunny sky.

On Wednesday another cool front will move in from the north and bring a slight chance of thunderstorms, but it will not bring much cool air with it. High temps will reach the low 80s on Wednesday and then remain in the low to mid 80s all the way through the upcoming weekend. The normal high temp for this time of year is in the upper 70s. A couple small storm systems will be in our vicinity on Friday and Sunday so right now I am forecasting more thunderstorm activity on those days, but the chances do not look too great at this point.

Weather history:
On this date in 1987 it was a hot day in the Upper Great Lakes Region. Nine cities in Michigan and Wisconsin reported record high temperatures for the date. The high of 90 degrees at Marquette, MI, marked their third straight day of record heat. Severe thunderstorm in the Northern and Central High Plains Region spawned half a dozen tornadoes in Wyoming and Colorado. Wheatridge, CO, was deluged with 2.5 inches of rain in one hour.

POLLEN COUNT
The grass pollen count for Thursday is 7, which is moderate. (courtesy of the Marshfield Clinic- Wausau Center)

FORECAST (updated 11:10 a.m. 6/21/07)

THURSDAY:
Partly sunny, chance of a few showers and thundershowers in the far southern part of the area. Summer begins at 1:06pm. High 77-82. Winds north 5-10.

TONIGHT:
Partly cloudy with patchy fog. Low 52-57. Wind east 5-10.

FRIDAY:
Partly cloudy and very nice. High 73-78. Winds east southeast 10-15.

FRIDAY NIGHT:
Variably cloudy. Few sprinkles late. Low 52-57. Wind east 5-10.

SATURDAY:
Partly cloudy and nice. High 77-82. Wind southeast 10-15.

It is kind-of strange how much I enjoy the rain nowadays. Just like everyone else, I usually have things to do outdoors and I don`t like it when weekend festivities are rained out, but for some reason I don`t mind it as much as in the past. I think the reason is because heavy rain has been so scarce for the last four years. I have spent so much time wanting and waiting for rain that it seems like a rare special event everytime it happens. Someone remind me the next time there is a real wet weather pattern that develops and it seems like it has rained every day for a week. Maybe I will change my tune when that happens.

Yesterday`s rain turned out a little heavier than expected. A half inch fell at the downtown airport in Wausau and most of our weather watchers reported two to three tenths of an inch. There were many reports of large hail up to an inch in diameter (mainly north of Wausau). There was also one report of a possible brief tornado touchdown south of Antigo that caused some damage to a couple of buildings.

Today the thunderstorm activity is shifting south and that is where it will stay for the next 36 hours. A stationary front will linger in southern Wisconsin during this time frame and it will be close enough that the far southern part of the area will have an off-and-on chance of rain. Any rain should stay south of Wausau and most likely south of Stevens Point. In that case it looks like most of the area will be dry and the only thing to be concerned about it the temperature.

Temps should be pretty comfortable for today, Friday, and Saturday. Lows will be in the mid to upper 50s and high temps will be in the upper 70s to low 80s. Sounds like perfect summer weather to me. If you like it hot, well then you will have to wait until Sunday and into early next week. A ridge of high pressure along with south winds should boost the mercury into the mid to upper 80s on Sunday and then into the upper 80s to around 90 on Monday and Tuesday. Along with the heat will come higher humidity. Make sure your air conditioners are in good operating condition. The next cool fornt will not approach the area until Tuesday afternoon or into Wednesday of next week. At that point we will have another chance of thunderstorms.

Weather History:
On this date in 1893 on the first day of summer the temperature at Dodge City, KS, soared to 106 degrees during the midst of a blistering heat wave. The heat wave initiated a severe three year drought in the Central Plains Region. Ironically, at about the same time, heavy rains in the Mississippi Valley were causing the river to swell to its highest level of record at New Orleans, LA.

POLLEN COUNT

After a wonderful weekend, temperatures are now heating up and the chance of thunderstorms returns tomorrow evening. Tomorrow will be noticeably warmer, as advections become stronger out ahead of a cold front, which will pass through sometime tomorrow night. Many places will see ninety degrees tomorrow, with sticky dewpoint levels in the 60`s. Skies tonight and tomorrow will be Partly Cloudy, until convection peaks tomorrow afternoon, causing an increased cloud cover. Winds will switch more out of the south west tomorrow and becoming breezy.
Currently, the forecast models differ on rainfall associated with the front. I think it`s for certain there will at least be scattered showers and thunderstorms along the front, but rainfall amounts and severity are still in question.
After the front passes through, things will dry out quickly. Wednesday we`re forecasting highs only in the 70`s, with comfortable humidity levels. Wednesday also marks the start of a string of very dry and sunny days. Day after day, through this weekend, we can expect pretty much the same weather. A large area of high pressure will set up over the Great lakes after the front. All the forecast models project this high to stay put all week long. So as of now, following tomorrow night, rain will not be back in the forecast until late next Monday. However, with the high positioned generally to the north, there is no big warm up is expected.
Although this could be a beautiful stretch of weather, we`re starting to fall behind again on rain totals. Currently, the national weather service has most of central and northern Wisconsin under a moderate drought, and matters will only get worse if this stretch of dry weather holds true. So let`s hope for the rain tomorrow night, because it could be a little while until we have another shot.

Believe it or not, it is now time to start talking about the forecast for the 4th of July. Independence day is arriving next Wednesday. This also means 2007 is half over. Where does the time go? The short version of the forecast is as follows - make camping/grilling/golfing/fishing plans this weekend because the weather will be a bit unsettled from Monday through Wednesday of next week. There could be some natural fireworks with scattered thunderstorms.

Now the longer version. Before we get to the gorgeous weekend weather we have to deal with fall-like conditions today. Once and a while it is nice to have some refreshing weather in the middle of summer - a nice break from the heat - and today is one of those days. We will start out with cloudy skies and then a little more sunshine will develop during the afternoon. High temps will only be in the 60s in the northwoods and in the low 70s across central Wisconsin. If the skies clear out tonight we could be talking about lows in the 30s in the northwoods and 40s in central Wisconsin. Might there be some frost in the north? It looks unlikely at this time, but I cannot rule it out for a few of the traditional low-lying cold spots like Land O lakes. It all depends on the amount of clearing.

After today, temps will warm back up to around normal. There should be more sunshine on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and high temps should reach the upper 70s.

The threat of rain will begin Sunday night and continue off-and-on at least through Wednesday morning (the 4th). It is not going to rain all the time, but there could be some thunderstorms at some point each day. There might also be some severe weather because the heat and humidity will return. High temps should reach the low 80s on Monday. Tuesday will likely be the most humid with high temps in the mid 80s. Wednesday (the 4th) will still be a bit muggy with highs in the low 80s.

This week is lightning safety awareness week in the U.S. Lightning is a weather danger that many people do not think about much but it is a significant threat. On average, 62 people are killed by lightning every year in the U.S. Last year there were 47 deaths and 246 injuries caused by lightning. The odds of being struck by lightning are much greater than winning the lottery. Here is a phrase to remember that will help you stay safe: "When thunder roars, go indoors". A house is the safest place to be and an automobile/truck/van is the second safest. For more details on lightning safety check out this website: www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/
www.yahoo.com/

Weather History:
On this date in 1975 Lee Trevino and two other golfers are struck by lightning at the Western Open golf tournament in Oak Brook, IL.
