Believe it or not, it is now time to start talking about the forecast for the 4th of July. Independence day is arriving next Wednesday. This also means 2007 is half over. Where does the time go? The short version of the forecast is as follows - make camping/grilling/golfing/fishing plans this weekend because the weather will be a bit unsettled from Monday through Wednesday of next week. There could be some natural fireworks with scattered thunderstorms.
Now the longer version. Before we get to the gorgeous weekend weather we have to deal with fall-like conditions today. Once and a while it is nice to have some refreshing weather in the middle of summer - a nice break from the heat - and today is one of those days. We will start out with cloudy skies and then a little more sunshine will develop during the afternoon. High temps will only be in the 60s in the northwoods and in the low 70s across central Wisconsin. If the skies clear out tonight we could be talking about lows in the 30s in the northwoods and 40s in central Wisconsin. Might there be some frost in the north? It looks unlikely at this time, but I cannot rule it out for a few of the traditional low-lying cold spots like Land O lakes. It all depends on the amount of clearing.
After today, temps will warm back up to around normal. There should be more sunshine on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and high temps should reach the upper 70s.
The threat of rain will begin Sunday night and continue off-and-on at least through Wednesday morning (the 4th). It is not going to rain all the time, but there could be some thunderstorms at some point each day. There might also be some severe weather because the heat and humidity will return. High temps should reach the low 80s on Monday. Tuesday will likely be the most humid with high temps in the mid 80s. Wednesday (the 4th) will still be a bit muggy with highs in the low 80s.
This week is lightning safety awareness week in the U.S. Lightning is a weather danger that many people do not think about much but it is a significant threat. On average, 62 people are killed by lightning every year in the U.S. Last year there were 47 deaths and 246 injuries caused by lightning. The odds of being struck by lightning are much greater than winning the lottery. Here is a phrase to remember that will help you stay safe: "When thunder roars, go indoors". A house is the safest place to be and an automobile/truck/van is the second safest. For more details on lightning safety check out this website:
