Talk about perfect timing! Yesterday was a great Fall day with partly sunny skies and highs in the upper 60s. The rain held off until after dark for most of the area. Once the rain developed, it was a nice amount that fell. Many areas received about a quarter inch. The heavier showers should end early this morning but the storm system will be slow to move off to the east. That means the clouds will stick around and a few light showers may yet develop during the afternoon. All of this, combined with a northwest wind of 10-20 mph will make it feel quite cool. High temps will be in the mid 50s. Clouds and a few sprinkles will remain in the area from tonight through about midday Thursday. If we are lucky, there could be a little sunshine later Thursday afternoon. Even with a bit of sun, high temps on Thursday will only be in the lower 50s.
Even colder weather will develop Thursday night into Friday morning. With clearing skies and light winds there is a potential for widespread frost. It will be our second widespread frost of the season. Unfortunately, the clearing skies that may lead to frost Friday morning will soon quickly become cloudy once again by Friday afternoon. Another storm system will move into the area and bring a good chance of rain from Friday evening off-and-on through Saturday night. High temps will be in the low 50s Friday and mid to upper 50s on Saturday.
It still looks like some decent Fall weather well develop on Sunday and Monday. With more sunshine and southwest winds high temps should climb into the 60-65 range for Sunday and 65-70 for Monday. In general, a more mild weather pattern should take over for most of next week. There may be a couple chances of rain, but temps should remain close to normal (in the low 60s).
Global warming stories were all over the internet and major media yesterday. It was triggered by the release of a study that claims the earth may be within 1.8 degrees its warmest temperature in the last million years. This prompted a lot of disaster proclamations. Here are a just a few stories about damage to coral reefs:

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn10159-global-warming-nears-a-millionyear-high.html. In a small way I feel empathy for the extreme environmentalists that are proclaiming the end of the world. I know how hard it is to get peoples attention and have them change their ways. Last week I discussed how rich so-called environmentalists are putting up extreme resistance to wind turbines in their communities. That is only one problem. Another problem is that the dangers theorized by potential anthropogenic climate warming are far off in the future. Environmentalists have been predicting doom for over a decade and yet in that time most of the inhabited world has not seen anything that would shake them out of complacency. There was a short intense heat wave in both Europe and the U.S. in the last couple of years, the sea level has risen a couple inches, and 2005 was a bad year for intense hurricanes. However, the bad things have not been persistent enough to make anyone want to change, and it is nothing that hasnt occurred in the past. In fact, it could be argued that a majority of the humans on the earth have enjoyed benefits from the warmer temps. Agricultural production and productivity continues to improve in the warmer climate. More regions of the earth are becoming available for food production. It is also a plain fact that people enjoy warmer weather more than colder/wintry weather. Through my experience in the weather business, I would estimate that 50% of the population absolutely hates winter weather. About 30% find it very annoying yet will tolerate a couple months worth. Only about 20% or less actually enjoys winter. Back in the 1800s and early 1900s, winters were much longer and the snow was deeper. There were many instances of killing frosts as late as June and as early as August. I have heard anecdotal evidence there was at least one year when there was at least a trace of snow each month of the year in Wisconsin. If this is the type of weather that environmentalists want to return to, then they are going to be met with great resistance. Take a look at the weather history at the bottom of the page. There was a black frost on this date in 1816 and it caused a year-long famine. I am not sure what is meant by a black frost, but I am sure I would rather not experience it again. Taken to the extreme, most people would rather have temps a couple of degrees warmer (the predicted rise over the next few decades) than slip into another ice age. One more thing that makes the environmentalist evangelizing hard to accept is the crying wolf problem. End of the world predictions are made on an almost daily basis. The direst predictions have never come true, and thus by inductive reasoning alone, a lot of people dont believe the current end of the world scenarios.
