Goodreads (Print) Duckling Book Giveaway: 50 winners receive a print copy of Duckling by Sharma Shields. The novel follows Hans, the son of an illiterate washerwoman and a penniless cobbler in early nineteenth‑century Odense, Denmark, as he navigates an impoverished life and escapes through the magic of storytelling, reading stories and plays aloud in his small home. After becoming orphaned, Hans flees to Copenhagen to pursue his dream of being a performer and writer, achieving his first taste of success with a forlorn fairy tale called “The Little Mermaid,” a story of unrequited love inspired by his own heartbreak. By 1856, Hans is an internationally renowned storyteller whose many fans include Charles Dickens, who invites him to visit him and his wife, Catherine, in England. Catherine, a mother of ten dealing with her husband’s betrayal, forms an unlikely friendship with the unruly houseguest. Duckling is a rich retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s life and literary lineage, a testament to how imagination lives on even after the story has ended.
