How Sweepstakes Advantage Verifies Listings

Last reviewed: October 12, 2026 by Kenneth Carlos

Sweepstakes Advantage has been listing free sweepstakes and contests since 1997. In that time we have seen every trick: fake sponsors, "giveaways" that are really data-harvesting forms, contests that quietly require a purchase, and promotions that ended months ago. This page explains exactly what we check before a sweepstakes appears in our directory, what gets a listing rejected, and what happens when a promotion ends.

Our verification checklist

Every listing, whether found by our team or submitted by a sponsor, is checked against these rules.

The sponsor is real and identifiable

We confirm the company or person running the promotion exists, and that the sponsor named in the official rules matches the brand on the entry page.

Rejected if: no sponsor is named, the sponsor can't be traced to a real business or verified account, or the entry page impersonates a brand that isn't actually running it.

Official rules are published and readable

We read the official rules for the entry period, eligibility, prize, number of winners and how winners are chosen and notified.

Rejected if: there are no official rules, the rules are missing basic disclosures, or the rules can only be seen after handing over personal information.

No purchase is necessary

A legal sweepstakes in the U.S. must offer a free way to enter. We confirm the free entry method exists, including mail-in (AMOE) entries, which we list separately under AMOE-Postal Mail Contests.

Rejected if: a purchase, payment, or "processing fee" is required to enter or to claim a prize.

The prize matches the rules

Our listing describes the prize, its value and the number of winners as stated in the official rules, not as hyped in an ad.

Rejected if: the advertised prize doesn't match the rules, or the prize can't be identified at all.

The entry page is safe

We look at where the entry link actually goes and what it asks for.

Rejected if: the form asks for sensitive data no sweepstakes needs (bank or card details, Social Security number before you've won), the link redirects through suspicious domains, or the page triggers malware or phishing warnings.

The dates and eligibility are current

We record the end date and who can enter (for example U.S. only, Canada only, age limits) and how often you can enter (daily, weekly, one time).

Rejected if: the promotion has already ended, or the dates on the entry page and the rules conflict in a way we can't resolve (see below).

The outdated-rules problem (and how we handle it)

Here is something most sweepstakes sites never mention: sponsors frequently reuse an old official rules page for a brand-new promotion. The ad and entry page clearly describe a new giveaway, but the linked rules still show last season's dates, prize, or end date.

Because we see thousands of promotions, we catch this often. When it happens we:

  • Compare the promotion's creative (the ad, landing page and entry form) against the official rules line by line.
  • Flag the mismatch on our side so the listing isn't published with a wrong date.
  • If the promotion's rules are mismatched we then test the entry form to make sure it works.

If you spot a listing whose rules and entry page disagree, please tell us.

Examples of listings we rejected

Sponsor names are withheld; the reasons are real.

What happens when a listing ends

Expired sweepstakes are the most common complaint about directory sites. When a listing ends or is removed, its page is taken down and returns an HTTP 410 Gone status, which tells browsers and search engines the page is permanently gone. Instead of a dead end, visitors see current picks they can still enter.

We also automatically block spam and junk search pages, so search results on our site lead only to real listings.

In a typical week we will expire 1400 sweepstakes listings.

We occasionally receive a commission for promoting listings in the directory. These affiliate listings are tested for validity just like every other listing.

Sweepstakes Plus is an optional membership for extra tools and listings. It is never required to enter any sweepstakes, and no sweepstakes we list requires a purchase. Sweepstakes Advantage does not endorse or guarantee any sponsor; our checks reduce risk but can't eliminate it, so always read the official rules.

What we don't guarantee

Our verification confirms that a sweepstakes appears legitimate at the time of review. We cannot guarantee that sponsors will fulfill prizes after winners are selected, that organizers won't change their terms mid-promotion, or that every entry will be counted.

We strongly recommend reading the official rules yourself before entering any sweepstakes, and never paying any fee to enter, claim a prize, or after you win. If something feels wrong, trust your instincts and report it to us.

Frequently asked questions

Are the sweepstakes on Sweepstakes Advantage legit?

Every listing is checked for an identifiable sponsor, public official rules, a free method of entry, and an accurate prize and end date. We can't guarantee any sponsor, so if something looks wrong, report it and we will review it.

Does Sweepstakes Advantage get paid to list sweepstakes?

We occasionally receive a commission for promoting listings in the directory. These affiliate listings are tested for validity just like every other listing.

What happens when a sweepstakes ends?

When a listing expires or is removed, its page is taken down and returns an HTTP 410 (Gone) status, and visitors are pointed to current sweepstakes instead.

Why do some official rules show an old date?

Sponsors sometimes reuse an older official rules page for a new promotion. We compare the creative against the rules and flag mismatches. We list the end date shown in the sponsor's current creative and rules, and note any mismatch.

How do I report a bad or expired listing?

Use the Report Problem option on the listing, or post in the Reported Scams forum.

Do I ever have to pay to enter a sweepstakes listed here?

No. A sweepstakes that requires a purchase to enter or to win is rejected. Sweepstakes Plus is optional and never required to enter.
